It was actually about Greg and I at our fall sports awards banquet when we were sophmores in High School.
Greg and I got varsity letters only because there were 7 people on the team. Our times did not dictate varsity times and we were both just starting out.
Our coach remarked about us, in front of all of the fall sports athletes, coaches, parents and teacher
Quote:
They finished every workout, went to every practice, never complained, ran JV courses at some big events and never complained. They never quit. I (Coach Martin) wish I had a whole team of kids with their heart.

It was a pretty great thing to say in that I still remember it very clearly. Ironically of the 7 guys on the team, Greg and I are the only ones who still run. Our- 1-2 guys got scholarships to college for track/cross country (both lost due to academic and personal problems), could "jump" into races and win. One of them (they were twins like Greg and I) ran a 235 marathon with little training. But, they always complained, never trained and always had an excuse ready. Greg and I were like the tortise and the hare I guess.

Coach Martin really inspired me that day to keep running, which is probably why I still do today

I always remember what they could have had but wased

The best thing a coach ever did for me was literally kick me in the butt. I may not remember much else about middle school track practice, but I remember that one incident well.

Note to coachmarkos :: Don't try this at an all girls Catholic school. Wink

Senior year, my soccer coach presented to me the "Most Improved Player" of the year. I was very proud of this one because I pretty much 'rode' the pine my Junior year, worked my butt off in summer and helped my team win my senior year.

I wish this had been a part of my formative years. We weren't really allowed to go out for sports. And by the time we could decide for ourselves, it was really too late to join organized sports. I feel like a part of my life is missing.

My parents had the mindset that education is what school is for, not for playing games.

They tell me now how much they regret that. I am really excited that my son wants to be in sports and wants to be active. School comes first, but any sport he wants to try, I let him. (too bad he hates soccer!!! that's my favorite!)

Now, I'm a runner and I savor every minute.

Probably nothing. I ran cross country and track freshman and senior years. Zero support for sports in my house. I sucked at distance running anyways - really had no idea the kind of effort it takes to excel. I rarely scored any points for our teams but I enjoyed it anyways. Both my kids are active in sports and they love it.

Coach Martin can still beat Joe and I running too. Because of him, we are so good at running hills, he made us do hill repeats a lot.

At the letterman's banquet my senior year, our track coach started saying before he gave out the letters that we had neglected to pick a captain. It has slipped everyone's mind. Anyway, he started saying he was going to appoint someone since we were most of the way through the season. Then he started remarking about the person he wanted and how this guy never missed a workout, never complained, always went one hundred percent, kept smiling, kept everyone laughing, and was a behind the scenes leader more than anyone else. You could've knocked me over with a feather when he called me up front.
