Just for the record, a package of Peeps, poked with holes then stored in a cool, dark place will become sufficiently (read perfectly) stale in 1 1/2 weeks.

Cheeky and I completed this experiment 3 days ago and have been enjoying the peeps as our after-school snack.

Thought you might be interested in our soon-to-be published in Nature article:

The OL and SC Official Peeps Experiment

Materials and Methods:

2 packages of Peeps; 1 yellow bunnies (16/pkg) and 1 purple chicks (15/pkg)
Pair of scissors
Index finger
One lab drawer

Peeps were received in the early AM by another scientist attempting to bribe the authors to continue an ongoing research project. The peeps, as received, were unsuitable for eating, as they were not sufficiently stale. Omega Lambda pierced the purple chicks 1 time in each sub-package, and the yellow bunnies were pierced three times in the entire package. Sandy Cheeks' prior experience prompted her to enlarge the scissor-pierced holes with her index finger. The peeps were then placed in a drawer to incubate. The peeps were left alone for 4 days, then checked daily by probing them with an index finger. Any recovery of the peep tissue was considered "fresh" and unsuitable for eating. After 1 1/2 weeks of drawer incubation, the peep's tissue no longer recovered from probing.

Results

The package of purple chicks was opened and the peeps were tested by various methods including a tensile strength test, a digital force vs. opposing force test, a hardness (impact) test, and an oral texture test. An appropriate amount of staleness was achieved with 1 1/2 weeks of drawer incubation.

There's a peeps quiz in our paper today...they say peeps are already made year round, but I never see them. Sad

We went camping a few weeks ago...roasted peeps....very, very, very good.
