I've pretty much decided that I'm going to get a HRM this Fall as I resume some type of normal running schedule. I've gotten into trouble in the past as I run too hard each time out and I think HRM will force me to slow down some.

Q's

1. What models are the best/most accurate at the best price? I think I would prefer a wrist model (over a chest strap) if possible for sheer comfort levels on long runs.

2. Does anyone have any suggestions on training schedules as I get back into a normal schedule? I don't have a specific race/running goal now. Probably just want to run 3 - 4 times a week. I'm playing tennis 3 - 4 times a week now plus weight lifting. Frankly, I don't know if I will have enough time or energy to run that much.

3. Any other thoughts or suggestions from those of you that use HRM in your training?

I have used both a strap and wrist model. My preference is for the strap, you get a constant reading, with the wrist model you have to both two fingers on buttons on the watch to get a reading.

I can only use a wrist model now, and I only use it when I ride on the trainer.

The wrist model is made by Impulse, my chest strap model was made by Polar.

My recommendation is the chest strap model.

The book Heart Rate Training for Idiots was very useful in setting up a program for me.

chest strap.
Polar or Timex are both excellent, used both love both.

I agree on a book too.

It is a fantastic tool to use with your running.

Chest strap. I use Sports Instruments Fit 2. Just use a lot of BodyGlide.

Katt has recommended "The Compleat Idiot's Guide to" something or order. Do a search here or PM her. I don't use a book.

I've worn my chest strap several times in races from 5k to marathon and never had any irritation. But if you do, def get some body glide or vaseline. Also test out wearing the strap in your training runs before wearing it in a race.

That's the one. Has some good schedules and info in it. I will most likely go back to one of the schedules to increase my base mileage after Chicago. I did it before marathon training this year and so far have been really pleased with my training and mileage. (and I give props to GaRebelRunner who gave me the info on the book!)

I also use the chest strap version and have never had any chaffing, but everyone's different. I have a polar, which I like, and the Timex Speed and Distance unit with HRM. The polar is a bit lighter, gives more info strickly on HR, but the timex has it's place too.

If you decide to use Parker's book, or just the HR formulas, I have a spreadsheet you can just plug your values into. You (or anyone else) is welcome to it.

The strap has no adhesive on it all, so there is no problem with it grabbing chest hairs. It only needs a little mositure to make contact and pick up a heart rate

I just forked out big bucks (about $300) for the Nike HRM that comes with a link to your computer and a pedometer. The software is really nice because I'm too lazy to write everything down. It lets you look back and see what your pace and HR were at any point during a run. Since every run is logged, I can look at my average HR for a 5 mile run 2 months ago, and compare it to the same run I did today.

I've heard great reviews on the pedometer, but I'm not impressed so far. The best example is on an easy day I ran 4 miles and it showed I ran 3.7. I ran the same course on a hard day and it showed 4.2 miles because my stride was different.

No problems with the chest strap, but I don't have much hair there.

Are you sure its calibrated right? That's a big difference. I have a Timex GPS system, and I get varying reading for but it only varies by a couple thousandths or so

Pedometers will give you odd results if you vary your stride length a lot. What I find interesting though is that on your hard day it measured longer. I take your hard day to mean a faster pace, which usually means you will have a longer stride (or a much faster turnover, but typically your stride will be longer also). If you have a longer stride, in a given distance you have less footstrikes which is what the pedometer counts. So if you have less footstrikes, the distance given should be shorter, not longer. And conversely, when you shorten your stride, that's when it will give you the longer distances. Check the calibration I guess.

Do I have a valid point, or is there some new technology in pedometers I don't know about?

I got the jist of what you were saying.

I think Nike puts their sensor on the shoe itself, not sure if that makes a difference or not
