Ok... I finally got the Idiots HRM book last night. Devoured first 6 six chapters already. I'm about ready to open up the good ole wallet to purchase a HRM. I went to Galyan's today on my lunch hour and there must be 8 different Polar models, 3 - 4 different Nike models, and 3 - 4 Timex Models.
Any ideas on how to narrow it down? I like the idea of a HRM that includes a pedometer (or GPS) and computer software to log/track my runs. Anything else I should consider?

Overstock has a few models for sale:
Polar A3 - $71.99
Polar A5 - $89.99
Polar M32 - $125.99
Likes/dislikes of your particular model?

My first was the A3 and I liked it. Still use it at times. It's nothing fancy but has been reliable. Most of the time I use my timex bodylink HRM. If you can find one that's coded, I'd go for it. You won't have as much interference especially if running near someone with an HRM.

Looks like the M series of Polar HRM's have the coded transmitters to eliminate interference. But you don't get the option to download your daily training files to your computer. The S series have the computer download option (which is something I will consider), but not the coded transmitters.

I got my first look at the Polar speed and distance monitor today. $359.00 but it has all the toys. After I drooled over it a bit, I put it back in the display case. My husband was ignoring all my very obvious hints. Some how he thinks the two hrms and the two gps systems I have should do me.

I would get one that has a coded transmitter. That way when you are running with others who have HRM's it will eliminate cross talk

I have a Timex HRM without any bells and whistles. I really wish I had gotten one with min/max/avg recall as well as ability to recall lap/split times.
Also, I can only store one target range at a time. That's fine right now 'cause I'm just base training, but later when I start moving into other zones, it will be a hassle.

Ya, I just bought a really basic Timex HRM (on eBay for $40 that's how cheap I am!) but what I really wanted was something with a GPS for speed and distance and a data logger that I could download to my PC.
Somehow I don't think I could have convinced my wife to let me drop $300 on something just for me - especially at this time of year.
Santa - please take note for next Christmas.

if you're looking for a cheap(er) body link system, try Al's Gift Shoppe online. I've had great luck with him, and as of last weekend, the system was less than $190

I started with a Basic Polar, did great. I now use a Timex-Garmin system which records your pace, splits, HR, and other stats and I love it.
The cost is near the same, howver, Timex you can replace the batteries. The Polar model you must send it in. My Polar lasted nearly 4 years and I used it quite often.
I recommend the chest strap. It is accurate and easy to read; I also never had any comfort problems.
Best of Luck.
