Hey guys,
My name is Brad and I'm new administrator on RFs together with Zoran aka zox. We would like to introduce some of our new ideas and also would like to hear your suggestions and ideas on how to improve this community and bring it on higher level. We are ready to improve some system features but would like to hear from non-tech aspect which new features would you like to see on RunningForums?
This is the question and we would like to hear your answers!
Our main goal is to attract more visitors, increase number of members and expand this community with additional forums and new features. Some of upcoming features will be: member blogs, image gallery, private forums, article system, etc.
The “Old members” will get the chance to keep their privacy in private forums, in case they don’t want to interact with other/new members. Every active member will get the possibility to create and host own blog on RunningForums. The members with more posts will have more privileges such as a picture gallery, custom blog design, etc...
Talented writers among RunningForum members will get the chance to write articles related to specific & relevant topic, etc.
There are a lot of other ideas to consider, some of them are still confidential and of course, we are open for your feedback and suggestions. If you have any idea or suggestion on your mind, don’t hesitate to reply to this thread. Let us know, because we love your feedback!
This thread is created to help us build up this community. We don’t want to discuss any irrelevant topics here so please don’t post sarcastic, off-topic, inconvenient, rude or advertising posts here.
So guys let’s hear what’s on your mind!
Thank you!
Brad aka Pseud0

A race finder/results is an awesome idea!!
What about a forum to buy and sell fitness related items? Bike parts, shoes, books on training, Garmins, etc?

Yep, it sounds great!
The first one will be implemented pretty soon, but the race finder?? Could you explain that in more details or do you have any similar examples?

Yeah, also a good one. We'll consider a online shop implementation as well.

Thanks for the intro, we've all been uber curious. I'm a zealot about running and just to find out, does it go without saying the site's focus will remain distance running? Blogs, galleries and articles are good add-on's, but is the intention to keep everything centered on running or will the blogs, articles and such become a place for other propaganda/agendas? I truly believe the "tie that binds" this community is running. It's the one single common denominator and without that touchstone, forums like OT or as I see on other sites, the internet itself is easily used to push people apart than bring them together. But as a running focused community, I really think that's our niche.
Do you have a mission statement? I know it sounds 'corporate', but I would like to see the site remain in the realm of distance running first, last and foremost; advice, insight, camaraderie and a place to find kindred spirits in this all life encompassing of pursuits called running. Coming to this site is where we can share those quirky stories and discover we're not alone. But again, just my two-cents, the further we drift from the commonality of running, the more often people get pushed to losing that kindredness.

CoolRunning has a whole section where you can advertise your event - there's templates and everything. Another option is to pool info from sites like http://www.sportstats.ca/ to make a master list. However, I'm not sure that would add much value.
What may be more interesting is a nice calendar that lists all of the events that the members are entering. You could link off to the specific race site, training logs, blogs, whatever.
I like the idea of articles, but who would edit/moderate them?
One other thing - what about RSS for different forums? Take a look at what you can do with xtri.com - they use RSS for all their articles, galleries, reports. I pool a lot of stuff this way in MyYahoo. Alternatively, you could use RSS to incorporate external sources to provide more information if you'd rather not leave all of the "guidance" to us within the forums.
One thing that may attract people is to provide training plans that are integrated into the training log. I think it's Nike that has this. You sign up with their training log, pick a training plan, and it fills your log's calendar with the workouts. It will even email you to notify you of upcoming training sessions.
That's all for now. But I'm sure that after my AM coffee I could think of more work for you.

If you supply "old" members with vouchers for free beer I'll be happy.

Hi,
welcome to the forum. and all the best with your plans for it.
i have a question, are you planning to sell ad space on the site? i'm curious to know if you wanted to operate the site as a revenue generator or just as a site the could sustain itself.
the rest of your suggestions/ideas sound appealing.

The same people, more or less, post everyday. Every now and again we get a good new member, but as it is now, I pretty much know everyone's personality.
I remember when Kick and Coolrunning merged. I spoke to many people about that and what drove a lot of them away was the fact that there were just so many new people and the site lost it's identity to many of us. I know you are talking about the private forums, but that is somewhat concerning also. Who decides who gets invited to the forums? Is it all old members, or just a select group of older members? Do you get invited when you hit a certain post count?

As another veteran of the Kick/CR merger/nightmare, I echo some of Jenny's well-put sentiments. For you, I'm sure this site is a profitable venture and I can't fault anyone for trying to make a buck. For us, however, it's a place on the internet where we've been able, for the last few years, to chat about running in some forums and life and all imaginable non-running topics in others. A lot of us have met in person and become friends, not just faceless names on a computer screen, and a lot of us "old" members take those connections pretty seriously.
Attracting new faces is great for profit and business, but as we've found in the past, not so great for the flavor of the community. I'm also curious as to how the private forums will work if you could explain that a little bit.
As far as the running related initiatives you're proposing, I think they all sound great! But unlike some here, I also come for the camraderie, fun, support and general sense of community that we've been able to maintain through self-policing and upholding a common high standard for conduct. I've seen in the past, as others here could attest to, that large droves of people flocking to a website often totally changes....and not always for the better, those common high standards.
Thanks for asking for our feedback and welcome to you both.
