What's up guys, I'm C.J., and I'm 16, 17 in October. I just recently started running again after hurting my knee in a soccer game my freshman year.
I never actually knew much about running, so that's really why I'm here. I'm trying to run to the point where I can eventually do a marathon, but I don't know what kind of training that involves.
Basic info: I'm 5'8 1/2", weigh about 140. Right now, I've got a 6:15 mile, but it slows pretty drastically after the first one. I play soccer, as stated earlier, but I want to be in better shape for that, too. I lift weights on a regular, scheduled basis to build lean muscle and increase my metabolism.
Blah.

I'm officially lost.
I do have a 6:15 mile, but only for the first one....
*backs out of room*
EDIT: This forum description does say to ask questions in here, so I'll just ask, and hopefully get some answers.
Like I said earlier, I want to eventually be able to run a marathon. I have to push myself for four miles right now. How in the world do I train for it?
And the other question is this: I want to increase my speed. What are the best ways to become a faster runner?

How often/far/long are you running now? If you are just starting out, the best way to get faster is just to run more. Slowly build your mileage and you'll get faster. Once you're running 20 or more miles per week, you can start doing speed work.

Right now I run about 2 miles every morning. I've been doing this since I started running again, and next week I'm going to try and bump it up to more mileage/plus night running.
Unless that's bad. I just like running.

I haven't had a 6:15 mile since 1997.

Well, I just really started running again, you can't expect me to be as fast as most of you guys probably are.

Hi C.J.!
I'd give my right arm to run even one mile ever at 6:15. I don't think anyone here thinks you're slow! Most of us are in awe.
Wanting to run a marathon is a great goal. How soon are you wanting to do it? Generally, I'd say you want to be running at least a year, and have a good base of 30 mpw for your first one. Many marathons will require you to be 18 also. You'll find you're a bit young for a marathoner, and that's great. Most of us started them when we were a bit more..."experienced" in age (not necessarily in running)
Right now I'd recommend you spend some time building your base mileage as it's so important for distance running. Increase it slowly to avoid injury, vary your mileage daily, one day run 2, the next 4 etc.. Bump up your shorter runs to start with when increasing, and add a bit to your long run.
There are some great marathon programs out there. Higdon.com, coolrunning.com are some online. There are also tons of books out there.
Have you done any racing before? You may want to train for a half marathon first and if you discover you love it, continue afterwards training for the whole thing. It will help you build your mileage, give you a goal to shoot for, and help you determine if you really want to spend all that time running. (you most likely will.) Marathon training takes a good chunk of your day, not to mention your year.
Good luck, glad you found us, and sorry for the long winded post. I'm sure you'll be kicking my tail in marathons (halfs, 10k's, 5ks) soon.

Kattzoo, thanks for the reply. I won't be 18 until a year from this October, so I guess I've got about a year and two months to train. I plan to start doing my run at morning and night, and slowly add more mileage as I feel the challenge going down. I'll be sure to check those sites out, too.
