Posted: 04/21/03 - 12:28 Post subject: Need tapering advice
I have two races 13 days apart. The first is the Broad Street Run 10M on S 5/4 that is an A+ race for me. The second is the Queens half on Saturday 5/17 that I have a very good shot at a major PR, but would consider this an A- or B+ race. In order to avoid stiffness I plan on running up to two days before each. Traditionally my tapering has been ... poorly planned.
Knowing that the first race is much more important to me, I obviously want to taper sufficiently for it. If at all possible, I'd like to also remain strong enough for the half (but again, I'm willing to sacrifice that race for the first). My current mileage is 45-50mpw, with a typical week being T-W-Th-Sa-Sn mornings with an evening double thrown in as my schedule permits. Sunday = LSD (currently at 15), other runs are between 6-10M apiece depending on how strong I feel on a particular day/time.
Question: how would you taper for these?

You will have no problem holding fitness for 2 weeks. Taper for Broad Street (My first Posse race), recover, maintain some tempo work and taper again for the 1/2.
I could barely walk after my first marathon and 2 weeks later PRed my 5 mile training run without trying.
