I am in Active Duty Army, and run a 13:04 2 mile PT test (in iraq) and I am looking to improve my run time. Significantly. My legs are not tired from the PT test, but I find myself gasping for air and wheezing after the first mile and a half, so I am unable to surge for the last half mile as I would like to. It usually takes me at least 5 minutes to catch my breath after the run as well.

I do not smoke, but I had allergy problems as a kid (I usually blew about 50-60% of a normal person my age in the peak flow meter), and my mom has borderline asthma - both of her siblings have asthma. I understand my breathing problems are largely genetic, but I want to overcome them as best I can to reach my physical peak.

My running goals are a respectable 5k and 10k time, whatever they may be.

Can anyone help me with any exercises as well as a training regimen to begin?

Hey Tim,

That's decent time for someone without formal running training. There are all kinds of training programs out there. One that I use is the Smart Coach, which is a simple program that can be found at RunnersWorld.

You have to plug in a few things and it spits out a custom training program.

Hope that helps.
