Posted: 10/06/03 - 16:41 Post subject: Need Teaching Help Please
Bella is stubborn, but I am beginning to think that this problem we're having goes beyond her natural personality stubbornness...
... she won't do her 6 like a six, and she never has... she does it backward. She does the same thing with threes, and she's also still confusing little b & d, and little m & n... even though she reads every other letter correctly when reading.
Any experience with this? Any hints on how to help her?

Will is almost 7, does quite a few letters & numbers backward, and I just correct him: erase, write it again. It reminds me of dyslexia, but I don't think he has it, just gets them confused. How old is Bella? It could be a problem like dyslexia. Will has no problem reading things, though, so I'm not sure D is the problem. Also, Will is left handed. Is Bella? I think that makes it more challenging as well.
Wish I had more thoughts. You could make her write them X amount of times when she makes a mistake, I did that a lot with Libby and spelling words. Although I will concede that she still isn't a great speller--we're still working on her. You might also speak to the teacher about the errors.
Good luck!

My 6.5 year old son just started doing his his lowercase b's & d's correctly over the summer. Practice on her part (without looking over her shoulder) and patience on your part will probably do the trick.

She is 6, and she's right-handed. It's just that we've been working this (especially the 6 and 3 thing) for literally years.
I guess just be patient, then, if this is pretty common? I guess I was comparing her to the only other kid I know well, and her sister has no problem at all with these things.
Thanks for your help.

I wouldn't worry until she's 10 and still doing it. I'm sure she'll get the hang of it. 6 is still a tough coordination age.

I'm just impressed she's writting. You should see what some of my upperclassmen do. If it's not done on a PC, then it's horrible.
Nothing to worry about yet. If it will make you feel better, then call her teacher and see what she thinks.

I am her teacher!
I'm kind of at a disadvantage, though, because I'm not homeschooling for religious reasons or anything, so there's no "support group" of other homeschooling families to which I belong. I'm on my own, mostly. So I research a lot and get a lot of help on the internet, but with problems like this one, that there's no chapter to look under the heading of for, I need a little human help.
Thanks, guys.

It's still very common to have problems with Reversals at your daughter's age. I used to see that all the time teaching K-3. My daughter just quit reversing her b/d's last year in the 2nd grade. If it continues beyond the 3rd grade, age 8, I would have it checked out.
Just continue to show her the correct way that the letter or number should be formed (next to her mistake). Perhaps you could make a special tag where she sits and does her work showing the letters/numbers she commonly reverses.
My daughter would make a letter "b" with her left hand and a "d" with her right showing b coming before d in the alphabet. It helped her remember the direction so much better. Try it with your hands. You'll see.
It's common. Can she identify them with no problem? If so, she'll probably outgrow it soon.
Good Luck!
