Posted: 08/31/02 - 11:24 Post subject: Need Help Quickly!
Guys and gals, I e-mailed this to some of you, but time is of the essence, since I need to decide what to do by tomorrow, so I thought I'd post this here, and at CR(please forgive me )
here is my dilemma. My last 20 miler is scheduled for next Sunday, 3 weeks before TCM. However, next Sunday is also the Sioux Falls 1/2 marathon, which I had been planning to run, but for some reason I hadn't been looking ahead enough.
So what do I do? My options:
1. Ignore the Sioux Falls 1/2 marathon and just do my scheduled run.
2. Run the Sioux Falls 1/2 next sunday, and do my last 20 miler 2 weeks before the marathon, instead of three.
3. I could take this Sunday off, after running today, run a 20 on Monday (holiday), still run the Sioux Falls half, and then just continue my normal training schedule.
What are your opinions? Right now as I read them, I am leading towards #3, but I trust in your judgement fellas and will take everything you say under advisement.
I would really like to get another race under my belt before the marathon. I have only run 1 10k and 1 1/2 marathon this entire summer. Which is not much for me. The last few years I ran a race about every 2 or 3 weeks.
Please let me know your thoughts quickly, as time is of the essence here!
Thanks!

I'd go with option #3, then maybe option #2, but option #1 doesn't sound like a good idea at all.

How many 20 milers have you put in so far in your training?
How keen are you on doing this race?
Can you do your scheduled 20 miler tomorrow and be able to do well in the race next weekend?
If you've done a few 20's then you should have a good enough base to run the half, do a long cool down and then TCM.
I would not suggest doing your last long run 2 weeks before TCM.

How's about a 20-miler on Labor Day Monday, the halfM on next Sunday, and then another 20-miler on the Sunday 2-weeks out? I think you'll recover just fine for the 26.2 with a 20-miler 2-weeks out. If you had said a 25-miler, I'd be more hesitant, but I think 20 is okay that close. Unless you're feeling fried, three solid weekends would be a great finale to the schedule.

Thanks for your help everyone.
I have decided to go with jrjo's plan. I just feel really ready and confident right now, and like he said, what a way to finish my training heading into a marathon!
This will give me 3 20 milers in four weeks, and a 1/2 marathon thrown in there for the fourth week. If that doesn't make me ready, I don't know what will :!:
