Posted: 10/05/05 - 08:54 Post subject: Need HELP with diet
okay, here it is:
I get up at 3:45am grab a bite and then do this workout:
1 set of 25 pushups, 1 set up of 25 situps, 1 set of 4 pullups- i do this 6 times in a row with 1.5 minutes rest in between.
I rest 2 minutes, then I do this workout:
1 set of 12 chest flyes, 1 set of 12 chest presses, 1 set of 12 back machine, 1 set of 12 (different) back machine, 1 set of 12 biceps, 1 set of 12 triceps. i do this 3 times in a row with 2 minutes between evolutions.
Then I rest about 5 minutes and run 2 miles.
My pre-workout is this:
1 egg, 1 whole wheat bread, usually 2 yogurts (20g sugars each), and bottle of gatorade (35g sugar).
PROBLEM: when I go to run I am burnt and have no energy to try and run hard. I have been tired lately and have lost prob 6-8 pounds.
I am 38 years old and do this exercize 3 times a week, with my off days just running 1 mile.
I am trying to build overall endurance and increase my ability run fast.
QUESTION: Too much? or do I need to eat more carbs in the morning to sustain my energy? Maybe more throughout the day also? Maybe even on my off days?
Is there better food in the morning for quicker energy? My body digests food pretty well in the am (even at 3:45am ). i have to be home by 6:00am to get ready for work.
PLEASE HELP: GETTING FRUSTRATED!

75 gm of sugar pre-workout. You are probably crashing from the sugar rush by the time you hit the run.
Try egg and toast with water pre-workout. During your break before the run, have a class of gatorade to rehydrate and give you some carbs for the run. Save the yogurt for post workout although that is still do much sugar. Try and find a brand will the least amount of sugar.

Consider adding a slimfast or boost type drink to your meal.
It is essentially vitamins/protein/fiber in an easy to digest form.
Sugars are fairly low if you have no other compounding illnesses, so you won't have so much crash factor. (At least that's what I've found)

How long have you been in this routine? Personally, I do workouts on basically an empty stomach. Over the years, I've definitely become accustomed to it and find it is the simpliest approach. I think your body will adapt well to a 'less-is-more' diet better than a 'more-is-more' diet in terms of pre-workout consumption.

He might have medical factors he should have checked out too as to why he's crashing. I hadn't thought of that.

Okay guys (and girls),
I will try just the egg and toast and then go from there. If that doesnt work Ill try the ensure/slimfast type thing.
Ive only been doing this workout for about 3 weeks.
QUESTION: how many carbs should I ingest during the day (post workout)? Keeping in mind I want to run at least 1 mile the next day.
How about my off days? Should I ingest a lot to help rebuild glycogen stores?
I am only doing 2 miles for now, I want to build up to 4 or 5 and get the off day up to 2-3.
I dont want to gain weight, if anything I want to lose it.
thanks for suggestions,
kel
