Have you seen these Frito lays products in store? They have gone back to the basics and it is great! No preservatives and no Transfats!!!! I can snack again. Wink

I really go out of my way to avoid eating foods with transfats and I am glad to see that some of the big companies out there are giving us alternatives. Mr. Green

mmm, transfats!

Wait....what's a transfat. I had an issue of Time Magazine, but i realized it was an article on health, so i kept flipping.

Before i eat something i have to ask myself two questions
1: does it taste good?
2: is it bad for me?
If i can answer "yes" to both of those questions, i know i can eat

I usually find that if the answer to 1 is yes, more times than not the
answer to question 2 will also be yes.

Science Lesson For Today:

Transfats are artificially produced solid fats.

Often the fats used in these products would be liquid at room temperature due to carbon configuration. However, sometimes that is not a desired state.

Transfats are reconfigured liquid fats. The process of bending them into a new shape is called hydrogenation - that's another word you've probably heard. Their new structure makes them solid at room temperature.

One of the reasons they are used is because they don't tend to spoil as much. This means your McDonalds can use their french fry frying-fat longer. Also, they are in things like margarine and shortening because then the vegetable oils will stay solid.
