Posted: 03/03/03 - 21:55 Post subject: Napa Valley Marathon... I got tan lines!!
Short version :: all ready public
Long version :: A little history of jrjo's prior marathon excursions.
1987 :: Grandma's 4:17... all done off of college track training, egads
1999 :: Twin Cities... comeback not meant to be, injury. DNS
2000 :: Twin Cities... injury midway through training, 3:37, Pr
2002 :: Gulf Beaches... agony of heat and humidity, 4:27
2002 :: Grandma's ... got the flu the day before and bagged at 13.1, DNF
2002 :: Twin Cities... another comeback, not. DNS, ran the 10M.
2003 :: Napa Valley... I'm happy to have kept two monkeys that plagued half of my attempts before. No DNS and no DNF. Despite this being my 198th race, I felt like an absolute newbie getting that medal draped over my neck...felt good! Yeah, the 4:07 wasn't where I felt I could be, but the sun was shining all morning, I saw wonderful green foliage that I haven't seen in months, the smells of spring were everywhere, and even after I showered there were some noticeable tanlines around my ankles.
So enough of the literary, you want the nuts and bolts right? This really is a small marathon. 2200 runners. And I think they let in an extra 500 this year since it was the 25th annual. I got to hear Dick Beardsley speak some on Saturday afternoon and some other talk about the course. With all the talk of a downhill course, I expected easy going. Well, heck, it's downhill in total, but along the way it winds up and down the valley. Nothing huge, but still it was all but a few miles of it being either on an incline up or incline down. I do think the rower helped me keep from frying my quads on all the uphills. They felt pretty good. My calves were a different story. I smacked the wall hard at 20M and was stretching my calves every half mile and shuffled all the way home...not pretty.
I knew going in I'd have a hard time of it with so much winter running happening on the treadmill. In fact, I wimped out enough during February that I only ran outside off the treadmill once the whole month. In the end though, I'm glad to have at least been able to get in enough mileage to start and to finish. A nice time would have been gravy.
So there's the report. I'm not a wine consumer, so I can't begin to report anything other than there was plenty and nooow I see the lure of this race for so many.

Congratulations, Jrjo! Great job and a very nice report as well.
Relax, take it easy, enjoy class and spare some appetite for dinner with the OC gang later this week!

Great job, jrjo! I would really like to run that one someday. Of course, I'd be forced to indulge in the wine myself!

Only a few more months until you can expand those tan lines.

Great job.
So a course that has 1,000 feet in elevation gain and 1,100 feet in elevation loss is basically a downhill course? Reminder to self: Look at the details.

Way to go, buddy!! I'm proud of you!!!! I know you weren't where you wanted to be, but I think you did great, and what better and more beautiful place to run in the dead of winter than Napa??? I'm glad you were able to enjoy yourself amongst all those vineyards, whether or not you sampled the spoils........
It was so great getting to talk to you, too! (he's got this great Minnesota accent.... )
Next stop...MADISON and a zany crew of Riff Raffers! Life is good!
