Tell me all about your fair city/school! Duke is among the top 5 contenders for the doctoral program and it's the only one I haven't gotten personal feedback about either from people who have lived there, gone to school there or otherwise love/hate the Raleigh Durham area. Do tell....the good and the bad! Duke's got a strong program but as most of you know, I am NOT a fan of hot weather--how bad are the summers there really?
Sadly, UNC's program doesn't have what I want, otherwise I'd be begging for Chapel Hill info- I already know and love Charlotte! (sorry, Brie but I'd come visit!) How far a drive is Charlotte from Durham?

It's about 2 hours via Interstate. Driven it many times for football games from Atlanta.

lived in raleigh for 7 years.
summers were brutal. sorry.
a tad hot and humid for my liking.
on the other hand, fall is gorgeous. winter isn't too awfully bad, and spring is the bomb.

And I thought this thread had to do with Coach K and the Lakers!!!!
My sister lives in Durham and seems to enjoy it. My brother lived in Raleigh while attending NC State and seemed to like it also. We all used to live in Charlotte and I loved it there. Sometimes I wish I could move back but not can't afford to up and move right now!
I take it Purdue didn't have the degree you were looking for??
Duke has a killer overall reputation so I don't think you would go wrong there.

Unfortunately, no. I did look there, IU and Notre Dame but couldn't come up with an exact match. My program is pretty specialized and there aren't a ton of schools that have it, or so I'm finding.....but I did try, honest. I wouldn't have minded living in Indiana.
PackerBacker, where are you from? I think you're around that area too, no? I know the running there is awesome from what I hear. My friends in Charlotte used to compete a lot against the crew from up north.
Hot and humid summers.... that's what I was afraid of. Worse than here, RR??

He Who Backs the Pack is from Raleigh. He often tells me horror stories about 430am runs still full of heat and humidity. PM him for more good time jolly fun.
I'm curious: you were very reluctant to look at U Penn because they were "snotty" and "arrogant". The other schools you've expressed interest in (Carnegie Mellon, Duke, Notre Dame, your nod at Princeton) at fit that bill, too, if not more so. Why are you still anti U Penn? Just because it's in the city?

My main reason is that I don't want to stay in this area, I don't like it, never have, never will. There are a decent number of people who work here who are from Penn, and granted, I understand that doesn't represent a necessarily accurate sample, but...they are ALL arrogant and snotty. In contrast, everyone I have ever known from NC, regardless of where they went to school, was a lot different (nicer) personality-wise and I always liked the south, other than the heat. I have other reasons for some of the choices I am looking at as far as relocating, but they're personal and I don't choose to share them. And trust me, Princeton could offer me a full scholarship and I wouldn't go there--I had enough exposure to that mindset on my initial interview back in my undergrad days. They were worse than Penn ever could be, and I've also heard that from people who live in that area.
So yes, in part, I don't want to go to school in Philly, and I don't want to live out here any longer than I have to. It wasn't my choice to be here and I've hated this area since I was a kid. Which, last I checked, is my prerogative, same as it is someone else's to love it here.

Good lord, calm down. I was just curious. My point was that you're going to find that uppercrust mentality wherever you go across the states, particular at the caliber of school you're looking at. You don't like it here? Move. No one's stopping you but you. It is your prerogative.

Oh, I agree....the uppercrust mentality isn't JUST Ivy League, but they're notoriously worse for it than some, and most of the schools in the south are not like that because the people are just different. I'm sure in all your travels you've noticed somewhat of a difference in personality styles when you were down south, even for work. Obviously Riff Raffers are all cool, so that's hard to judge
You're right....the main reason I want to move is because I really hate it here. Honestly, most of the schools I've looked at, their programs are very comparable. It's really going to come down to what area I can best see myself living in for minimum of 5-7 years, possibly permanently. I just wish the south wasn't so damn humid.
