Posted: 05/10/05 - 12:03 Post subject: NBA MVP controversy?
In what was the 4th closest vote in NBA history...Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns won the NBA's MVP over Miami's Shaquille O'Neal.
Dan Lebatard of the Miami Herald wrote an article saying that race was factor in the vote. Basically saying Nash won because he is white.
I personally disagree, but was wondering what the peeps think?
Note: At least 5 people left Shaq off of their top 5 list. Which is an amazing display of idiocy. (I should know, as a leading idiot.)

I would disagree, too. The last white MVP was Larry Bird in 85/86. Nash won because he is one hell of a player who makes his team better.
I'm surprised that Shaq didn't win since I think he is the sole reason the Heat have dominated this year, but I wouldn't say that Nash won because he's white.

Shaq turned Miami into an instant contender. He's that good. He's that dominant inside.
Nash is good, but I don't know enough about his team to say whether it compares to Shaq. But I'm leading towards it not.
I don't think it's race, though.

Well, the Heat were a playoff team last year, even won their first round series.
Shaq leaped them into the best record in the West.
The Suns were a lottery (non-playoff) team, added Nash, and have the best record in the NBA.
So, in that aspect....you gotta go with Nash
However...Nash's old team is still in the playoffs, playing against him, in fact.
Shaq's old team...went from the NBA championship series to a non play-off team.
So, that way...you gotta go with Shaq.
I'd a voted for Nash, I guess. But it is kinda ludicrous that Shaq has only won 1 MVP. Every single analyst says he's the most dominating player. Every year. And yet he's only been most valuable once? Don't add up.

I think they see his poor FT %, and figure he's not working to improve it, or he doesn't care about making it better.

It's 2005. I doubt it's race. Especially in the NBA. I mean, look around.

I think it has to do with "big man" problems than anything else.
If it's a race between a little guard, and a dominant big man...more people will vote for the little guy.
"He's big, he's supposed to be dominant."

I think Shaq earned it this year. Much like the years Jordan earned it when they gave it to Karl Malone. I digress.
Both were key additions to teams with amazing records the dominated their conferences. Too close to pull the race card.
I would have given it to Shaq this year. Nash is the 2nd or 3rd best player on his team. Even D -Wade can't make a claim to being top dog on the Heat. I was shocked to learn that Nash was even in the running.

Canadian hater!
(I don't watch the NBA, so that's as much of an argument as I can contribute)

why does shaq automatically win?
nash and shaq essentially did the same thing.
and just because nowitzki stepped up and kobe stank it up, the former team play doesn't have anything to do with it.
it's based on what the individual player did for his team in the past season.
i fail to see what that has to do with either of the players former teams. that argument doesn't hold any water with me.
i'm glad nash won - i don't know about in the states - but he was getting mad love in the canadian press this year. i heard about the suns more then i heard about the raptors.

and i don't think it counts as controversy - wasn't there only like a 12 point difference between the two? it just means it was amazingly close.

As I am from LA obviously everything about Shaq (beside the fact whether i love him or him) is pretty big.
I would have to say that I think Steve Nash deserved the MVP, but only depending on the way you interpret it. The Suns went, what was it, well, they lost at least 50% of their games without him, which is a lotconsidering their 60 win regular season record.
MVP stands for most valuable player.
If you are doing MVP, biggest difference to their team, Steve Nash
If you are doing MVP, biggest difference overall (if put to any team), Shaq
IF you are doing MVP, best individual player, you have to give it to AI. Averaging 30+ points and nearly double-digit assists (not to mention one of the top leaders in steals) is pretty amazing.
