Head out on my MTB to work, and I keep hearing this weird humming noise every once in a while. Thinking it's just the cars passing me, I keep going.

Just as I'm crossing a freeway overpass, and I'm between on- and off-ramps, I hear metal pinging on the pavement. Then I hear it again. Then I >nail< a pothole. Then I hear a sharp metal-on-metal sound, and that humming noise is really loud now, and my rear tire isn't moving all that well.

In between expletives, here's what I think happened:
[1] One screw came out of the bike rack, causing the rack and paniers to rub the tire (humming sound)
[2] More screws come out of the rack (pinging sound). Now the rack is only held on by the seat mount.
[3] Hitting the pothole snaps the seatmount, causing the rack to slam downward....onto the screws holding the rear deraileuer, shearing off one of the screw heads. The rack is now resting on the tire.

Wishing I hadn't done strength training, I decide to do more, riding the bike about 3km to the nearest hardware store. Thankfully they had everything I needed, and all the screws only cost me a total of $0.50.

I have no cash on me. I have my debit card, but it's a minimum $5.00 purchase to use it.

Fine, now I have all my screws, a chocolate bar, a PowerBar, a bottle of OJ, and some lip balm.

So finally, I'm at work eating my chocolate bar, my PowerBar and drinking my OJ - none of which I really wanted. What I really could use is a beer....

Can't wait to see what happens on the ride home. At least my lips will be moisturized....

I'm sure the Powerbar, OJ and even the lip balm taste better than the gallon of gas you'd have otherwise bought with that five-bucks! Surprised
