On our first morning there. One of the volunteers helping to serve breakfast had Airborne jump wings on his hat. I had asked him if they were indeed jump wings and he said yes. He then told me he was in the 101st Airborne in WWII and had 4 combat jumps in the war, 27 total parachute jumps. He was a decorated war hero who completely downplayed what he did.
I asked him if he would take a picture with JJ and I because I told him I wanted JJ to meet a genuine war hero. He was humbled by my accolades on him and gladly posed for a picture.
He has served in the area that I have read 100's of books on and served with one of my favorite divisions in the war.
People like him are dying so fast that soon they will all be gone.
JJ and Hannah both shook his hand and thanked him for serving the country. I knew that the man loved the gratitude displayed on him. He just said he did what he had to do.

A true definition of a hero and an American.
