Posted: 08/16/04 - 16:41 Post subject: My older brother is going to prison.
I hate to say it, but I'm pretty relieved. He's been on a path of destruction for several years now, despite the entire family trying to help him out. He has a severe drug and alcohol problem, he of course thinks he has no problem. 2 years ago he tried to kill himself on christmas. I've been very worried lately because I know he's been taking Xanax on top of tons of beer and I figured sooner or later he was going to kill someone. Luckily he didn't. He got pulled over and issued his I don't know what # of DWI he's up to now and had several bales of pot in his car. Hopefully he'll get cleaned up enough to realize what a loser he's been.
Anyway I'm relieved, but then I feel bad for feeling that way.

Our flag at work is at half mast because Sunday morning a coworker
died in a car wreck. He had been drinking and was not wearing a seat belt. He left behind 4 children. I'm sure they would have rather their father been in jail.

I'm sorry, Akey. Either way, it isn't good. I hope he finds his way to a better life and I hope you know you've done all you can and can rest easy. Keep loving him, because I'm sure he still needs that.

Sorry to hear that, but I understand the part about being relieved. Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom for a wake up call.

so sorry to hear this Akern. i remember the christmas story, very sad. i can imagine it has been so so hard for the whole family, watching him self destruct like that.
i really hope he comes around to a better life someday.

sad, but maybe some good will come of it. I'm sure you have a lot of emotions surrounding all of it. good luck at sorting it out.

Good luck Akern. Hopefully he can straighten his act out while incarcerated. If not, at least he's off the road for a while.

I am sorry to hear of this, Akey. I hope he can reflect on his situation and is able to get the help he needs.
Don't feel bad about being relieved. We all mess things up in life - some things are more consequential than others. With a sister like you in his corner, he's got a big plus in his favor.

how long is he in for and is it state or county time.
Generaly county time is a little bit easier, less hardened people are there.
It has to be hard for the family either way. I really hope that prison helps him.

I can relate.
Some people are so broken that they don't realize just how broken they are. Hopefully, getting clean will help him pick up the pieces.

I relate also. My older brother got jail time with work privileges. The biggest thing was getting his license back. He could not get them without family (parent) counselling sessions. My parents refused at first. They felt it was a ploy to "blame the parents". It turned our family upside down. My father stopped drinking, as well as just about everyone else....except for 2 BIL.
He's been dry for many, many years. He said it definitely was being in the jail with criminals that scared him straight. I would have imagined that the near-death experiences would have been a factor. I hope jailtime is "the ticket" for your brother. I enjoy having mine around (most of the time, anyway)
