5. You have to plan buying beer. You can't just head to your local C-store. I suppose that's a good thing too.

I think what that means is that you have to buy your beer and booze from liquor stores. You cannot just get it from the 7-11.

I think so anyway...

I wonder if PA is dry on Sunday? I hated SC for that. You couldn't buy anything with alcohol in it anywhere in the state on Sunday. Many restaurants closed for the day as well. Confused

Yes, you're right--we have what used to be called State Stores which are now Wine & Spirits stores for everything but beer, and larger distributors that sell both cases and kegs of beer, wine coolers, Zima, that type of stuff. You can't buy it anywhere else other than picking up 6-packs at the bars.

I think most of the liquor stores and beer distributors are closed on Sundays, but you can get 6-packs at most of the bars. Restaurents are usually open.

Are we the ONLY state in the union that you can't get alcohol in the supermarket, etc????

The little corner of Iowa that i went to college was like that. The town closed up on sundays with very few business open. Taco Johns was open, though.

Where are you talking about in Ocean County? I was born in Toms River and a lot of the beaches in that area are as crummy as Childwood. LBI is fairly nice, and a little further north, up towards Manasquan is better but it still doesn't beat the beaches down south.

Or are you from up farther near Sandy Hook?

Some of the public beaches are not so nice because of the daytripping bennies, but the private ones are to die for. Specifically Ocean Beach III, halfway between Seaside Heights and Point Pleasant - the place of my childhood summers. Where I got my hideous sunburn last Sunday whilst sleeping in a beach chair. The whole strip is actually pretty clean: from the south - Island Beach State Park, Seaside Park, Seaside Heights, Ortley, Lavallette, Ocean Beach I, Ocean Beach II, Monterey, Ocean Beach III, Chadwick, Normandy, Curtis Point, Bay Head, Mantoloking, Point Pleasant. I think that's all of them. The beach fronts at Mantoloking are owned by really rich folk: Barbra Streisand has a home there, as does Steve Carlton to name a few. The places you mention are considered South Jersey beaches to Ocean County folk, and are not as clean as the ones I mentioned. I haven't been to LBI since high school, but remembered being shocked at how disgusting it was.

Yeah, that's where we lived when I was a kid. We either went to Seaside Park or Ortley if we just wanted quiet or the Heights for the boardwalk. I've already driven the two hours down there just for an ice cream waffle at the Kohr's stand and come home the same night. Smile I like Bay Head also. I haven't been down there since my grandmother died a few years ago, I usually go to Bethany or Dewey Beach in DE or St. Michael's in MD now. I didn't realize you were from down there also, for some reason I was thinking you were further north, or is that just where your parents live now?

My uncle has a house in Beach Haven West, which is off the main strip on LBI at the southern end and that's not too bad. The part of BH that sits on the strip is kinda yech, you're right about that. Our cousin is up at the far end of the island by the lighthouse and that's pretty clean but Surf City and some of the main strip areas are getting congested, which will result in dirty. I was just amazed at the difference crossing one state line though, but you're right about the more private beaches, they are definitely much better kept but I think it's mainly because there's less traffic from the shoobies and more residents who seem to have a greater respect for the area.

The Big House was in Wayne, 20 minutes from NYC. Fall, Winter, Spring there. The Shore House at OBIII, Summer. I spent every summer of life there until I was 22. Miss it terribly. Can't wait until I become a teacher so I can get there more often.

That's right. I knew that NY accent came from up north Wink I know what you mean, I had a lot of good times down there as a kid. Good motivation during that last semester or two of school for you, methinks. Smile
I can't bring myself to go down there anymore since my grandmother is gone though, everything we did involved her and it's just really hard now. Maybe I'll try again sometime this summer.

I hate to tell you this, but, much of what you discovered there isn't true over here in the western part of the state. We don't call our softserve "custard" it's ice cream. we don't have "Wawa's". soft pretzels aren't everywhere. "water ice" dunno

In Beaver County(yeah... beaver county... go ahead and laugh)near my hometown there is a "custard stand" which sells the creamiest soft serve/custard evah! It's the only place I know in Western Pa that calls soft serve custard. Oh...and water ice is italian ice here...
