Posted: 08/13/06 - 11:43 Post subject: My first real brick!
I have done the ride then the run many times but wasn't sure if that really qualified as a brick workout or not. So today I planned my frist ride/run brick and am still confused by the results and wanted to share. I went to the gym and started from there, JUJR was gonna meet me there after I had 10 miles on the bike and then ride with me while I ran. I had my shoes on the counter all ready to go, just slip them on, helmet off, P if had to and off on the run was the plan. The bike was OK but I was nervous not wanting to push it hard or anything, saving my legs. I was kinda tired, or so I thought, after yesterdays 6.6 mile run the 30 mile ride and light swim. I had 10 miles in 43:00 and got to the gym a couple minutes later where JR was waiting and grabbed my bike and took it in the gym while I ran to go P which apparently I didn't have to do. I came out of the potty n JR tells me she had untied my shoes for me! Thanks JR!! Not a big deal really, an extra few seconds and off on the run. Immediately my legs felt great but within a minute or so they kinda felt like rubbery lead. It felt like I was dragging along very slowly but I was also breathing harder than normal so not really knowing now if I was fast or slow. I had told JR not to tell me anything about my speed/pace as it would most likey throw me off mentally and cause a train wreck. I thought I'd just go by feeling this first time. I am usually very good at guessing my pace within a couple seconds but not today. I did my regular loop on the run which I usually do in 10:15-10:30 pace WITHOUT a ride first. So here are the results.........
10.78 mile ride 46:30.
T1-1:49
3.55 mile run 34:46. A PR on this loop. My splits:
9:40
9:38
10:05(hills)
5:22
I am amazed/confused at the speed I had on the run. And very surpised at my inability to feel this was happening.
I'm sure I'll remember this when I have a bad day which is gonna happen I know. But today, I'm feeling like I can be a triathlete.

Rubbery lead. It gets easier.
You can be faster comming off the bike because of increased turnover. High HR is normal too. Relax your upper body and take some deep breaths to help get it back to normal running levels.

INCREDIBLE!!!!!
I am so impressed with your results today!! I truly am!
When I attempted to do a brick last week, my legs immediately felt like I had bricks in them (very heavy and not able to move). It's funny that you mention the breathing. I thought it was very hard to breathe. I could tell that my HR was up and I couldn't get it under control like I normally do when running. My 10 minutes out/10 minutes back goal didn't quite work out that way. I ran only 2 minutes after the turn around and then had to walk. I couldn't run anymore due to my breathing. I was amazed at how difficult a brick was and that I couldn't run.
Your times looked great on the bike and you had nice running splits.
Great job!!
Oh and...you are a triathlete.

Awesome! And like TriBob said, they do get easier. I just did my second one this weekend, and while my times were consistent, the level of pain/discomfort was[b] significantly[/] less.
BTW - sorry about the potty break not happening.
My splits:
20km ride - 43:46
pseudo-T1 - 3:27 (damn gate jambed, gotta fix that)
5.6km run - 32:26
I should be training with you though - I was off by more than 3min for a run PR.
