With all the womens swooning and the yackety yak about House I decided to give it a try. It wasn't too bad. Someone give me the back story. Why's he crippled? Is the nurse trying to snag him or what?

Dr. Gregory House is played by Hugh Laurie  , a British Actor known mostly for comedy roles (Jeeves and Wooster, Black Adder). He had an infarction in his leg, which was not diagonosed properly, causing thigh muscle to die. His former lover, Stacy, made the decision when he was in a coma to have the dead muscle removed, thereby leaving his leg crippled, requiring him to walk with a cane and ingest large quantities of Vicodin.
He is the head of Diagnostic medicine at Princeton/Plainsboro hospital, and is considered a genius of diagnosing infectious diseases. His staff consists of three young doctors, Allison Cameron, Eric Foreman, and Robert Chase. His best friend is oncologist James Wilson, and his boss is Dr. Cuddy. There is speculation that House and Cuddy have had some sort of "close relationship" in the past.
The show usually consists of a patient coming to House with some mysterious illness, then House and his staff try to figure out what it is. There's usually some complication which means that the initial treatment makes the patient worse, until they figure out the problem.
There is usually some other subplot, often with patients House encounters in his dreaded clinic duty.
