Fox Cities Half Marathon, Appleton, WI. I woke up around 4:15am. or so to rain hitting the windows, thought to myself, hmmmmm, this won't be fun, maybe I'll just roll over but I couldn't do that (2 year old was hogging the bed). By the time I got ready and headed down to Appleton the rain started letting up and actually had stopped by 6:00, cool. I started my race off like I usually do, going out too fast, I seem to have this problem when I run in larger races but I actually felt pretty good yesterday, did my first 4 miles in 24:02, had a bit of a slow down for miles 6, 7 and 8 with mile 8 being a 7:02, Shocked , but I think that may have been miss marked because mile 9 was 6:05 and the rest were all right around the 6:15-6:25 range, who knows but it doesn't matter anyway. I finished my run in 1:22:41 which is a 45 second PR for me. Placed 15th overall (out of around 1400 people running the half I think) and was 3rd in my age group. Overall it was a very good day, and to top it off we had a surprise birthday party for out 6 year old in the afternoon that actually surprised him, that usually never happens. By the way, runaroundsue had an awesome run also, way to go girl!!!!!!!-cjay

I was thinking there are a lot of people that would think that 1:22 would be a good 10K time. Wink

Excellent run, Cjay! You fast dudes always amaze me....congrats on the PR and the placing!

What are your thoughts on the marathon there? I've always thought that Fox Cities might be a possibility for me some day...

mega---

I'm jumping in. I did the full marathon 2 years ago and the 1/2 this year. I had a little discontent with the full two years ago and it's "minor" to many. But because the 1/2 and full start together, the marathoners are finishing with the half marathoners that are taking over 3 hours to do a 1/2--so in essence the walking 1/2 marathoners. This year in the brochures they requested the 1/2 marathoners to "give the curb" to the finishing marathoners. I was toward the end to watch a friend finish in 3:13 and the walkers were walking 3-4 abreast and the runners were running around them. So...the race directors can request.....but......

Other than that....this year was an exception (no wind)...but most years the course get a little tough at 22 due to against the wind. The best thing that I can say about fox cities is definitely the spectators. The roads are pretty crowded and they cheer for "everybody". Your race numbers have your names printed across the top and the volunteers and spectators "will" call them out. The water stops are well manned and the event is well organized. If you want to feel special when you cross a finish line...this is one to put on your list. The announcer does a great job.

I'll have to go along with sue on this one mega as I have yet to run the full marathon. It does have great crowd support and is well organized. I know the home stretch can get pretty windy but it hasn't the past two years. Usually the weather is pretty nice around here for a race also at this time of year. Also the race falls on the Octoberfest weekend here which can be a lot of fun, they close down the main street in Appleton and have food and bands galore.
