PostPosted: 10/05/04 - 09:02    Post subject: My Hunting Trip
Well it was a great weekend to be up north in Wisconsin. We left Friday morning around 9:00 and got to the campsite around 1. We stayed at a national campsite in the Nicolet National forest. Our site was right on the North Branch of the Oconto River. It was beautiful. We setup camp, changed into our hunting gear and headed out. We were hunting by 2:00. It was suppose to rain all day but we got lucky. It was overcast and about 68 F. We hit it hard from the start and produced a lot of birds. We flushed 14 Woodcock and 6 grouse. I got one grouse and I was reliefed, nothing worse than being shunked. We decided to go back to camp around 5:30 or so. So we could get a fire going while there was still some light. Just as we get back and crack open a beer the rain starts. We waited for a half hour or so hoping it would pass and then headed up to the local tavern for some burgers and what not. When we left the rain was letting up a little but the temperature had dropped about 25 degrees. As I was sleeping I was awoken but my bed vibrating, I look up and see my dog is shaking like mad. I pulled her in bed and covered her with most of my clothes and I couldn't get her to stop. Finally I opened my mummy bag and wrapped her in it. I found out that you can't fit a man and a dog in one of those things. I spent the rest of the night freezing (jena was nice and warm though) We woke up around 7:30, the tent was covered with ice, the thermometer read 25 F. Shocked it was only suppose to be a low of 42.

First thing we did was head out and buy some polar fleece blankets and dog pillows so the dogs would be warm the next night. Headed out and hunted the afternoon, with great numbers of birds again. Temp about 48&degF. Flushed 6 woodcock and 7 grouse. The wind had picked up so many of the birds we never saw. Got back to camp built a fire and set the dogs up snug as bugs in rugs. Once again the temp dropped down to about 25 F. I woke up a few times during the night to recover Jena but she was warm.

Sunday we broke camp and went for a few hours. Another great day for the birds. Flushed 7 woodcock and 6 grouse. The Dogs worked great, if only my aim was as good. I finished the day with a woodcock in the bag.

It was a great trip and a great way to refresh the soul. I don't know if I have ever worked so hard and enjoyed it so much. My arms look like I got into a fight with an 8 leg cat and I am sore in places I never knew existed but I wouldn't trade it for the world.

northern WI is so beautiful this time of year!!! We were up at our land last weekend and had 5 different cars drive up to see our place. We didn't stay overnight as it looked like it was going to be a cold one. Hopefully, we'll have heat for deer hunting season. (not that it affects me at all Smile)

I'm insanely jealous. Congrats on at least getting a grouse. I've yet to drop one of those crazy birds.

Sounds like a great trip, RB. I can't wait until the boys are old enough to understand and (hopefully) enjoy camping.
