Yes Eric, that's fantastic progress!
Randy, the problem with doing that at the beginning is that you actually have to acknowledge just how badly out of shape you really are. I certainly didn't want to know that info about myself when I started. |
Thanks for moving this thread. I actually thought about posting in in the Starting line to show any newbies what running can do for you.
They Y is great and they even store all your scores for you so each time you have it done and they print you a new paper copy you can review all the results.
I think I am going to have to put a lock on the pantry after 9 pm and just drink water. I have cut back hard on the beer during the week. The hard part is the weekends. One of the staff members at they Y showed me stretching routine to use that should increase my flexibility. Now I am going to try and mix in some work on the rowing machine and weightlifting to reduce my weight and bodyfat again. I know I don't fit the Long distance runners mold and everyone is still shocked to hear I am 190 pounds. Hopefully by this December my weight will be back down near 180 (still my goal weight from 2 years ago) I should kick butt in the Jax Marathon.

| Sandy Cheeks wrote: | | Wow! When did you start running? | It was mid april 2001 right after I had the first fitness evaluation done. I knew I was in pretty bad looking shape so I promised my self that if I ever became a full time employee (as opposed to a contractor) at BCBSFL then I would join the Y. I started running solo for almost 5 ,onths and then I hooked up with some people on my floor that run and they have really pulled me along. I have even gotten 2 other coworkers to start running!
So here I am 2 years,about 6 pairs of shoes, and 2239.7 miles later feeling pretty good about myself. Pretty scary now that I am even thinking about trying to Qualify for Boston in about 2 years. I know I will need to bump my mileage some to get there but I am looking forward to that challenge. I am even thinking about doing a 50K next year.

I posted these results over at the other place and one guy made a good point on how based on my heart rate etc I am in great shape but if you take my height and weight and calculate my BMI etc I am still overweight so you really do have to take everything into account when you are looking at how fit you are.
Anyway thanks for all the great support and keep on running everyone. Based on the miles and times some of you guys (and gals) I know I will never be in your league but I am sure pleased with the fact I am now consistently finishing in the top half of my age group in races and top third overall, including my first top 10% at the Gate River Run this year.

Was the same person doing the testing each time? Also, did you follow the same routine each time before you took the tests? Ate the same foods, fasted the same amount prior, etc.
And, cool progress, btw.

To answer your questions:
The same person did all my testing. I did fast about the same amount of time. IN terms of evening meal the day before I don't remember from year to year. I do know that I hvae been fighting the late night munchies for the past 6 months and so far I am losing. Hopefully since the Mrs. has stopped buying them that will help cure it.! I am also looking to start cross training more to improve on the other areas.

Actually I didn't get any negative responses there. It just revolved around how BMI is calculated etc and the fact that according to my height and my supposed build I am still overweight by almost 10 - 15 pounds but according to all the measurements I am actuallyin pretty good shape (except the flexibility one )

I thought I posted this last year but I guess not so here is last years and this years results
May 2004 (Age = 36)
Overall Score = 55/100 (Not sure about the drop from last year since I didn't change age groups???)
Weight = 187.3 lbs
Height = 71 inches
Skinfold Test: 15.7%
Lean Weight 157.9 Bodyfat 29.4
Resting Heart Rate: 58 -
3 Minute Step Test: 72 BPM -
Bench Press (80 pounds as many times as possible) 24
Half Situp (1 Minute) 67 Reps -
Flexibility(Footline = 15") 11.25
Blood Pressure: 116/70
Here is this years report:
April 2005 (Age=37)
Overall Score = 78/100 (Not sure about the huge jump from last year since I didn't change age groups??? It must be a flaw in the software)
Weight = 195.5 lbs
Height = 71 inches
Skinfold Test: 15.8%
Lean Weight 164.6 Bodyfat 30.9
Resting Heart Rate: 56 -
3 Minute Step Test: 69 BPM -
Bench Press (80 pounds as many times as possible, based on a cadence) 33
Half Situp (1 Minute) 64 Reps -
Flexibility(Footline = 15") 12.5 (slowly getting more flexible)
Blood Pressure: 115/77
I am happy with everything except maybe my weight. Part of me is about ready to accept that I am not going to be thin runner. I will always be a near clydesdale type of runner.
To anyone else that is just starting to run, please keep your chin up and keep on pounding the miles.

I think the "overweight" standards are a bunch of bunk.
I know some skinny people who would literally drop dead if they had to run a mile.
I know some overweight people who are actually a lot healthier and live a healthier lifestyle.
*I was healthier/more fit when I was overweight than I am now.
But back to you!!! YOU ARE AWESOME! I'm very proud of you for sticking to it and you deserve all the accolades. You have earned every single one!!

I know I am not overweight based on my bodyfat, but I sure don't look like a runner! No one ever believes me when I tell them I am a 190+ pound long distance runner.
