Posted: 08/30/06 - 08:30 Post subject: My Crazy Freakin Morning
WOW.
I was at this hotel in Dallas when it happened sleeping peacefully on the 7th floor. I had an early flight to catch so I walked out of my room at 5:30am, walked over to the elevator and waited and waited. So I gave up waiting and took the stairs (remember, I had no idea what was going on). I get to the bottom only to find 2 officers waiting for me WITH MACHINE GUNS. One officers asks me 'ARE YOU A CIVILIAN???' It was so early in the morning that I think I just mutter "uhh...yeah?". He says "Head towards the ballroom".
I'm thinking, 'thanks!, he's giving me a shortcut to get out of the hotel. As I walk past the ballroom I noticed about 40 people sitting around a table and I'm thinking 'pretty early for a conference! Sucks for them!'.
I keep walking and in the lobby, that's where I realized something was wrong. It was FULL of police officers with machine guns. I head straight for the garage where I find more cops just hanging around. Get in my car drive out of the garage to find ambulances, firetrucks and cops ALL OVER THE PLACE...the entire section had been blocked off. (remember, I still don't know what's going on). I drive past them and they just stare at me. FINALLY I get to an intersection, roll down my window and flag down an officer. I say "Good morning, can you tell me what happened at the hotel? I just left from there?". He says "WHAT?? HOW THE HELL DID YOU GET OUT OF THERE!!??" followed by some suspicious awkward looks at me. I say "Why?" He says "there's a crazed gunman on the 4th floor that had already shot a police officer!!"
Me---> and and
I'm at the airport right now still trying to comprehend the crazy-ass morning I've had. My wife is gonna FREAK!
Oh, here's the story:

A SWAT team surrounded the Radisson Hotel at Mockingbird Lane and Stemmons Freeway in Dallas early Wednesday after a Dallas police officer was shot as the gunman held a woman hostage.
Police Chief David Kunkle said the drama began at 4:30 a.m. as the officer accompanied medics to a room on the fourth floor of the 13-story hotel.
"The Dallas Fire-Rescue received what I understand was an injured person call," Chief Kunkle said. "Almost immediately, the officer was shot through the wall in the upper leg."
Colleagues dragged the officer, bleeding profusely, to safety. Medics rushed him to nearby Parkland Memorial Hospital for emergency surgery.
The seven-year veteran of the force was in stable condition and his wife was at his side.
"This situation is very dynamic, and we are now in negotiation with the suspect and have been in communication with the hostage," Chief Kunkle said.
Hotel guests were urged to remain inside their rooms for their own safety. A hotel restaurant was evacuated.
Traffic on busy Mockingbird Lane and the service road along Stemmons Freeway were blocked to traffic, although there was no impact on Stemmons itself.
