Posted: 10/17/04 - 17:40 Post subject: My Columbus, Ohio Marathon Report (long)
Going into the race I was nervous. My training has consisted of 5k training. I wasn't feeling really into it. I just was kind of there.
At the start of the race, it was about 37 with wind. The siren went off and we started making our way to the start line. Only took just over a minute to get to it. We get to mile one and I notice my split. 8:02 . I felt like that was all the faster I could do. I decided that this was going to be one that I really had to work for, so I pushed up the speed. Mile 2's split came in at an amazing 6:39. Ok. I think I can hold this except for my knee and my shins were bothering me. I keep pushing and eventually the soreness goes away. I'm still nervous because I feel as if I'm pushing much harder then I should. By mile 5, I had changed my goal to give it all I had and if I crash in middle of the race, oh well.
By mile 7, I had dropped to a sub 7min pace. I kept pushing it not knowing how long I could hold the pace. I was skipping most water stations (as per my plan) and was getting more fatigued then I remember normally getting. But yet I kept pushing. I was going to find out where my limit was.
Mile 13.1 came in at 1:29:03. At this point, I realize that PR is out of the question. I'd have to negative split in order to get the PR, but Boston is still within reach, so I keep going. I keep ticking off the miles. The soreness in my knee and my shins comes and goes. But I keep pushing through it.
Then mile 17 hit me. I hit the 17 mile mark at 1:55. While I'm running I do the math based on a 7-min pace. I realized then that in just over 49 minutes, I'd be done and I'm going to be within a minute of my PR! So I started pushing harder. Every mile I came across, I did the math and every time I was slower then my PR by around a minute. At 20, I was 2:17:29. 6.2 miles in under 41 minutes? Could I do it? Only one way to find out and that's to keep pushing until I can't push anymore.
2:36:23. 3.2 left. Our HS cross country runs 3.1 miles. Our JV runners do it in over 21 minutes. Can I do the same distance in under 22 mins after running 23 miles first?
2:42:45. 2.2 left. Can I do it in under 16 mins?
2:49:25. 1.2 left. Can I do it in under 9 mins?
2:55:28. 0.2 miles left. If I run this in under 2:30, I get a PR. But I'm hurting. And right now, a 8 minute pace sounds fast, but lets give it all.
As I come around the corner with just less then 0.2 left, I saw an incredible sight. Downhill finish!!!! I gave it my all. Every exhale was loud. I was hurting. I wanted to slow down. But I saw the finish and was reeling it in faster and faster. As I approach, I hear "From New Castle, Indiana, " from the announcer. I can just assume he said my name after that, but I didn't hear and didn't really care because by that time, I had crossed the line. I look down at my watch to see 2:56:40. That would have beat my PR by 1:20!
I got my gear, found my truck, and drove home.
As I'm writing this, more results are coming into the website, but right now, this is what the website has for me.
overall place: 85 out of 4310
division place: 18 out of 192
gender place: 81 out of 2716
time: 2:56:37
pace: 6:45
10mile: 1:08:18
half: 1:29:03
20mile: 2:17:29
So according to official time, I beat my PR by 1:23. Can't complain too much about that. Oh yeah. And the negative splitting? I negative splitted by almost 3 minutes.

2.56.37???? Smoking times there.
The weather conditions in Columbus sucked big times. Of course you may have been been done when the nasty wind gusts/rain/hail moved in too. Did it make you run faster???
Wow, congratulations again on the negative splits in a cold nasty marathon!!!!
