I am the only personal trainer on staff. My town is very small, 3000 and the need for 1 on 1 personal training is just not here. I design programs for members all the time and show them hands on what/how to do it. My services are included in the price of your membership. I pride myself in customer service.
Yes, you do need special certification to be a personal trainer.

When you entered the partnership, I'm guessing you kicked in some cash?
I won't ask how much but what is done with the money then? Are you paid like an hourly employee or how do you split up the funds?

That's cool that you are.
Is it a test that can be studied for, or does it require extensive schooling, etc?
Just curious as it's one of several career changes I've contemplated.

Yes, when I bought out her share I paid her what was the fare market value. It was less than her initial investment. She lets me make monthly payments we are friends. She still works 1 day a week for me at the gym.
There are 2 of the 5 who get paid like an hourly employee. Me and 1 other. He just gets a few paid hours a month. All 5 owners are required to work 8 hours a month, plus a free night. All donated time, not paid. Beyond that you get a barely more than minimum wage hourly rate.
Interestingly, the 2 who do the least asked recently to be able to give up there free night and oped to pay the partnership 50 bucks a month to get out of working it.
Before I came on they had the opportunity a couple time to take a small cash draw each from the business. They chose to put the money toward the loan on the equipment and not take it themselves. Last year was the first year we actually made money and it was very minimal. This year has been much better and we expect to start to take something in dispersements next year.
Gym equipment is very expensive.

Sadly it can basically be bought by anyone over the internet. Or you can do it the right way and pay for a course, study and take a test, hands on and written. Most larger cities off this somewhere through different sports organizations.

So to do it the 'right way' is a sort of in between. Not extensive schooling, but not as simple as sitting in on a test either. Cool.
I could manage a course or two, but getting another degree might be a little too much of a time commitment with a little one and another on the way.

"How do I get to the funeral home?" For realz. We are in the same building.
Besides that, it's "what is the fastest way to lose weight?" My answer "the safest and fastest way to lose weight is by eating a well balanced diet and exercising." Imagine that.

You could do it. Where do you live? The market for Personal Trainers is pretty good in the bigger cities.

I've thought about it a few times. J/K. The other day a lady calls and is asking if we have personal 1 on 1 training and other stuff. She says her hubby has a ruptured disk in his back and the Dr. won't touch him until he loses 100 lbs. She asked me if he could lose 100 lbs. in 6 months! I said not safely! I said passibly a year with a good cardio program, no weights to start out, and some help with nutrition. She then tells me well he can hardly walk etc. etc. etc. I felt bad but honestly what can I say or do at this point. He hasn't come in YET.
I've seen and heard it all I think.
