Scroll down for pics and and splits...
here's the boring stuff...
Drove up to Nashville (Franklin) on Saturday and spent the night with the in-laws. Couldn't sleep for poo because they keep their thermostat at 82°F and that's a little too warm for me to sleep well. (that a pre-race nerves)
Got up at 5AM and had a granola bar and coffee. On the drive to the race, I had a bag of Skittles. Somehow, the pre-race bag of Skittles has become a ritual for pre-race prep, kinda like the pre-race hair cut I always do. Wife and daughter came along too. :w00t: in-laws went to church.
Arrive in plenty of time. Get checked in and snagged a semi-premo spot for the transition. They had a weird trans. area because you had to run around ALL the bikes to get to yours.
Met up with Poky and RunningRob (from CR). Poky was there to volunteer and Rob was doing his first ever multi-sport event.
<time passes - it starts to rain>
Lined up at the front of the pack for a 2 mi. first run. Gun goes off (not really) and I took off. The leaders pulled away from me quickly. I just wanted to not get too far behind them. First wet mile in 5:55. Right on target. <rain slows and stops> End of the 2 mile run was done in 12:12. Only a few seconds slower than I was hoping for.
In and out of T1. Uneventful, helmet on the right way.
Out onto the bike. A pretty flat course and no traffic because the race was held in a business park and part of the bike was on a bike path. Passed a few people, got passed a few times. Lapped of a few of the slower people because it was a two loop bike course (11.5 miles total). Not sure what my split was. After the race, I checked the speedo and it had 21.4 MPH avg including running into the transition. Slower than I had hoped, but good enough. Still probably one of the better splits for the day. I really need to work on being fast like Sheldon.
In and out of T2. Uneventful.
2nd 2 miles was the same run course. Nothing major to report. I was hurting though. Think I went out too hard on the bike. Managed to pass 1 or 2 people on the run. Got passed in the last 50 yds by some guy that came from out of nowhere.
Finish time was 59:13. I hit my goal of under 1 hr. but I was secretly hoping for a finish time in the 57-58 min range. Overall winner finished in 51:58. I just can't imagine how I could shave 7 minutes off my time to be that fast. He had to run 5 min/miles and bike at 24MPH to get that time. Unbelieveable.
It was great to meet RunningRob. Great guy! We'll probably meet up at more Nashville races. Poky was as cool as ever.
Splits - 2 mi run @ 12:12 (6:06 pace) / 11.5 mi bike @ 21.4 MPH / 2 mi run @ 13:05 (6:33 pace) // 59:13 total time - 10th overall*/2nd in my AG.
*8th if you take out the two teams that beat me.
RunningRob talking to my wife. Is that a banana in his pocket or is he just happy to see her?
Friend of Robs (Katherine?) finishing
Me finishing
RunningRob, Me and Pokychick
Race face.
Rob and his friend Katherine(?)
Katherine, RunningRob and I - that mug in my hand was the trophy.
Rob and I. I'm bitter about having to provide a urine sample.
Katherine, Rob, me and Poky. Rob was seconds away from accepting his trophy for winning the "guy with only one leg" category.
The Father's Day, father/daughter pose.

You gotta have people callin' you Big-John, no? You're the tallest guy there
Good goin' man, nice race. I'm sure Poky yelling "you suck" was the really motivator to go sub-60 though
