well, i saw this event yesterday. took my teenager as my church had bought out two showings this weekend.
i spent alot of time counting the tiles on the ceiling in the theater. incredible brutality, almost to a sadistic point. my son's eyes never left the screen James Caviezel was entirely too handsome yowzah. i'd never seen this guy before; he did a beautiful job portraying Jesus in the flashback scenes.
the last 12 hours of His life, in living color. Mel Gibson drove his point home; if you are a visual learner this film will set you learning, that's for sure.
I was truly moved by the flashback scenes when Jesus would interact with us normal peeps and especially with His mother-- very touching and i was hoping for more of them as they interrupted the tale of His long, slow demise at the hands of his captors.
there is a message of HOPE here; an incredible message of hope. it may be obscured by the violent nature of the entire film, but i felt it loud and clear. i hope others will leave the theater seeing the light thru all that incredible darkness.
truthfully, i dreaded going to this film. i dreaded taking my unchurched teenager who fought me every step of the way. we both left the theater feeling very different . Overall, it was a very good thing for us.

I think I really need to see this film. I have a lot to be thankful for in my life.
I think sometimes we as Catholics take for granted what Jesus did for our sins (I know I do). From what I have read about this film, this does put it back into the proper perspective.

My husband wants to go, but I do not. I am sure I will probably cave and go with him.
I am fully aware what my sins did. And what Jesus did for me. I will have a hard time seeing that. But, it will be good for me anyway, I am sure.

I saw this Thursday and was very moved by the film. I hadn't wanted to go, due to the violence. It is brutal. I hid during a good deal of it, but am still very glad I went. It was obviously a labor of love for Mel Gibson.

our church bought tickets for us as well...It was a really powerful movie and very effectively conveyed the message of Christ's suffering on Earth. I never really considered how much Christ actually went through to sacrifice his life for the world. It puts things into perspective.

I saw this tonight, although I really didn't want to.
Basically what I had gathered from everyone was that if you're Christian, it's a great movie. If you're not... it's a long drawn out beating. And I thought it was the latter. As a movie, it was terrible. As something that drives home a point or has great meaning to someone of religion... it probably does much better. As far as I know, it followed the bible pretty well. It's been a while since I've read it, so I'm not certain about some things.
Definitely not worth seeing. At least if you're non-Christian.

I tend to agree with MechEng on this one. I am not a Christian and simply have no interest in this movie. Everyone at work is giving this movie rave reviews and insists I must see it. I simply have no interest in it. But they are all Christians, some of them very devout. So for them I think it is a very moving experience. I just don't think I would get anything out of the movie that I don't remember from my Southern Baptist days, so I probably won't be seeing this one unless someone buys me the ticket as well as a popcorn and coke.

Was not as bloody as I thought. Mel's interpretation was pretty much right on. Probably pretty close to how it was. Some of the symbolism and subtle things that happened were incredible.
The ending was just right for me.
