Ran this race today with a friend who is working through an injury and we agreed to take it slow.

We got a pretty good handle on the take it slow part--we finished in 3:00:06.

The race started at 7:30. It was 74, drizzle and 100 per cent humidty. It stayed like that the entire time. The first four miles went well. Starting a bit past the 5 mile came the bit hills. We climbed and climbed up some very steep grades but we never broke our stride. At one point I did start running backwards up a hill but believe it or not we train to do this. By mile 9 we were just humpin' it water stop to water stop. But we finished laughing about our miserable time and truth be told we just had a ball and never let the time get to us.

This race is sponsored entirely by a software company and their employees compete for the best water stop title. The runners vote as the move through the chutes. The winner was "The Matrix." All the volunteers were dressed as either Neo or Mr. Smith. They had signs up like "Drink the red poweade and you stay in the race. Drink the blue powerade and you return to your comfortable life in bed."

I drank the red, but I still had to finish the race in order to get back to my bed Wink.

All in all, a good time was had by all. But the pizza rolls at the end were my favorite part of the race Very Happy.

Very good time it sounds like. I would have been LOL at the red & blue powerades. Very fubby.

Glad you and your friend enjoyed it--and what a good friend you are, taking it slow with him/her. Very Cool

Sounds like fub! I know it takes a special sort of dedication to run a half around the 3 hour mark - good job on sticking through weather that so clearly sucked.

3-hrs is 3-hrs, I don't care what pace it is, that's no cupcake run. Good for you on taking a buddy to their goal thumbs up

Really though, running backwards for short stretches at a time is a good way to give some running muscles a break while you use a different combination, but not losing much pace. It's a gallow-walk mentality without the slowdown. I had a coach that had us do that from time to time...gonna have to give it a whirl again now that the cutting edge run-texas crowd is popularizing it Wink

Well, once you trash you calves you can turn around and trash your quads, thus giving you a nice matching pair Surprised!

I too ran in this race. It was my first half and quite an experience at that. Alan hit the nail on the head about the weather. Not ideal but it could have been worse. I was all about running to my ability and really pushing myself. I took off too fast and ended up paying for it after all the hills. I also learned that hamburger, hot dogs, fries, dougnuts and cokes are not a good pre race day food choice. I ran into a serious "restroom" issue at mile nine that left me running for the woods. Serious cramps followed my potty break. I guess it was the stopping that did it. It slowed my pace for the last four miles. I finished in 1:43:09. I was pleased with my time. Gives me a time to try and beat at the 3M half. The waterstops were so cool and really lifted my spirits. The cliff shot stop really helped at the half way point. I don't have any experience with gu but it really made a difference during the race! My pace in this race was 4 seconds per mile slower compared to the Pervasive ten miler a month ago. I was really hoping to hold a faster pace given the month of training that I had put in. All in all it was a blast. Its amazing the rush I get running down the final stretch. Hearing my name being called out and all the people cheering is such an awesome rush! I love to race and really push myself. I am really feeling it today!
