Look at local race results. That's usually what gets me going.

That or go back and look at some of your older (faster) times.

Here we go again. Neutral Funny too cuz I have spent the morning thinking about this after the thread in RR where blue was talking about the tension bands and trying to keep his GF motivated. I said I suck at motivating people and PH said he did too. We both seem to be of the mind set that you just need do it period. He(PH) also said that his inability to motivate people keeps him from possibly coaching others. PH, what a horrible waste of talent and knowledge. Sad That is the mind set(you just do it) of many coaches, myself included. I don't advertise that I coach people but I do assist a few people here and at my gym. Nothing hardcore though. And I don't expect to have to motivate my people. At least, not on a regular basis. We all have bad days or go through slumps but if you need to be motivated or have you hand held about everyday you need to rethink what you're doing. And MED I'm not directing this at you. You don't seem to be constantly lacking motivation.

I have had many people say I motivate them, I'm not sure how. Maybe by setting a good example. Discipline, determination, drive. I would never ask/tell anyone to do something I haven't or wouldn't do myself.

Most of my motivation is either looking at the scale or knowing that I have a race that I am training for. Since it is the summer and no long races planned I am trying a different kind of training and cross training more to see if that helps me fight the doldrums.

I went looking for that exhausted feeling that I used to love so much. I thought I had it with a 4 miler (longest run since January... sad) in 88 degree temps at a pretty good clip. I was dying at mile 2 when I hit the half mile stretch of full sun, but I made it. 10 minutes later, not tired at all. Neutral I guess I should be happy about that, but I think it's the whole gradual build-up thing that I have a problem with. I haven't run much in the past few months, and I don't want to waste my time with 3 milers. I don't get satisfaction out of that. But if I jump right back to 8 milers or intervals, I'm pretty sure I'll end up with shin splints. Neutral

Sounds like you're burning out. My suggestions in no particular order:

1. Take a week off.
2. Read a magazine/book about running.
3. Trudge through this period, especially if may be running a marathon in the future--you have to run when you don't want to.
4. Run in a different locale.
5. If you run with music, buy some new tunes, or audio books....
6. Find a hot babe to run with, (if you are married, please disregard.)
7. Run shorter, maybe faster.
8. Cross-train for bit.
9. Reward yourself after every run.
10. Join a running club.
11. Pick a race, develop a training regiman and work backward to today.

My motivation comes mainly from reading articles on www.xtri.com. Especially from the Age Grouper section, where a lot are from average guys like me (just faster).

And of course, a visit to the Team Hoyt site is a good kick in the a$$ too.
