Posted: 01/06/04 - 11:12 Post subject: Motivation
Good morning all, Dancer, Lickitysplit, and I are gathering the troops for the trek to Disney for the marathon this Sunday. we have been writing some motivational/inspirational emails to each other and I thought some were very good that I would share them with you all. some of our clan are first timers while others are seasoned, but I think these notes are good for all .....
Ahhh, the week before the marathon, one of the worst times during the training cycle...did I run enough?? am I healthy?? is that twinge in my leg going to flare up?? what about that toenail of mine?? can I really do this?? All these doubts/questions in our minds.
These thoughts are normal and only mean that we are taking this event seriously and are focused on the big day. Yes, we all trained more than enough, we all were out there for the past 3 months pushing and training our bodies for the big day. Each one of you have your own story, will face your own hurdles on Sunday, and will have your own success story. It is truly amazing to me that we have this dedicated group of athletes who can train and focus energies on running the 26.2 miles. On Sunday, step up to that start line, take a deep breath, reflect a on your great achievement of getting to the start line, and then run with discipline, energy, and focus.
On Sunday I wish you all a positive attitude, a smile on your face, as well as, endurance and strength to push through those tough miles on the course. Every marathon I run I find out something new about myself, and I am sure you all we get to see a part of yourself that you always knew was a part of your being. Of course you would not expect an email like this not to have my famous saying, yes there will be tough at times out there, but hey if it was easy everyone would be doing it!! You can work through those times and keep focused on moving forward.
To those who do not train for and run in marathons, the idea of a marathon seems untouchable and/or ridiculous. For those who accept the challenge of the marathon, their lives are enriched with a special physical and mental knowledge, confidence, energy, and strength. Congratulations to you all on being one of these special folks.
Just my thoughts
here is another:
I think everyone has already earned the right to be very proud of what they
have accomplished as an athlete and person. Remember those days when you
didn't want to go out and train - but you did. Or those runs where all you
wanted to do was stop - but you did not. Those are the moments that make
us champions - finishing the race is icing on the cake. Everyone is going
to do amazing - have fun, enjoy it and know that there are alot of friends
and family rooting for you. I can only second what Terri wrote - the
finish line is alot closer if you keep running. The last few miles are
going to hurt, but don't stop. I think my best memory of my first marathon
was around mile 24 - when all of sudden it hit me "I'm going to finish a
marathon" - that sense of accomplishment was well worth all the training
miles, aches and pains. See you all at Disney!
and one more:
Only 6 days until the marathon. So Excited!!! There's nothing like running
your first marathon. Both of you have trained your booties off (Weens
literally for you!) and I know you will do great. When you're running on
Sunday you'll have some difficult moments and when those moments come you
just have to run thru them. One thing that my brother told me last year
really helped. He said the last few miles are going to hurt. They'll hurt
if you run and they'll hurt if you walk. At that point it's easier to keep
running. Running will make the finish line approach faster. Each of you
may have different ways to deal with them but I find having inspirational
phrases in my head help.
My inspirational phrase to you for Monday is one of Jeanine's favorites too:
"PAIN IS TEMPORARY. PRIDE IS FOREVER!"
