My motivation officially stepped out for the semester. I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did, heck this is midterm week and I've done every homework assignment (to at least 50%) to date. But that's about to change as I just don't care anymore. I hate school.

the U.S. need mechanical engineers more than ever. your remaining time in school be over before you know it and then, then you'll be out in the stupid real world with all the rest of sad mofos who wish that, maybe just for a day, they could be back at school studying thermo and stuff
/end motherly rant.

That's what scares me the most. I have this feeling I'm going to get a job and absolutely hate it. But I can't imagine anything I'd rather do, so I stay where I am.

truer words never spoken! I think a mech. engineer has the widest array of potential job opportunities out there in the real world.

tough love department here.
If that's the case you have no one to blame but yourself.
Motavation is tough when we all look for the easy way out instead of finding why we wanted to take a field of study or even a new job.
The best option is to find at what point you felt the desire to continue your studies start to decline and determine if this had to do with a personal/family issue........................work/study/teacher issue...... or the expectations of the course did not match your lofty goals.
We all have these moments come up from time to time, and if you find the point it happened to you and ask yourself if its worth seeing this to the end. You will have a better ideal what your career goals are.

I hate what I'm doing now, but can't think of anything I would enjoy, so I stay where I am.
Now it's over, I'm dead and I haven't done anything that I want...
Or am I still alive and there's nothing I want to do?

hey, you know I care about you--you're one of my faves on this board. So let me share this with you.
Due to circumstances beyond my control (although I ultimately made the choice) I dropped out of school with three semesters left.
I always thought I'd get to go back quicker, but it just hasn't happened. Due to finances and moving and my husband's career.
Now I really don't know what I'd want to do in life.
I wish you luck--you are so close. Don't lose your motivation now! I remember I hated this time of year and lost all my momentum, too.

I went through this as well in school. You have to get through these phases and just trudge forward. That's all there is to it. One day it will teach you to trudge through a job you hate to report to each day.
Actually, it will teach you to get through the ups and downs of your job. Hopefully you'll wind up doing something you like. With anything though, you never 100% like everything you do.
You'll miss your college years one day...trust me...you will.
