Did any of you catch Oprah this week on body image and self-esteem of young girls? It had on a 3 year old obsessed with her looks and a 4 year old obsessed with not getting fat. The gyst of the show was how mothers can so easily pass on their own baggae and low self-esteem to their daughters especially. Looking at that 3 year old girl was freaking me out, she's the same age as Hayden and although he's a boy, I couldn't fathom him saying or thinking the things this poor kid was saying. It was really sad.

It really made me think about how important it is to set a good example on body image, healthy eating, heatlhy exercising and lifestyle for the right reasons (to be healthy) v. obsessing about looks and "not being fat'. I have vowed to never comment on any negative thoughts I may have about my own body in front of my daughter and to always encourage her the positive side of all of this. I may gripe to my hubby at times about my sagging boobs and stupid c-section scar that healed crappy, but I will not utter that in front of my little girl ever. Even now I talk to Hayden about exercise since we go to the gym most days but I talk about it in terms of being healthy and good for your body, not to "stay skinny".

It was just a really sad and scary thing to see these poor girls. I don't see how they get over such an obsession that begins so young.

Okay, just my serious thoughts for the morning.........

I saw this as well.
I thought it was very sad.
That beautiful blonde girl on there made me cry. You could tell by her cry that she truly hurt inside.
I hope, when i have a daughter/son of my own that myself and my future husband will both instill a good self esteem within our child...

Yes, those have been good, too. I was off watching because it was all celebrity interviews and dumb stuff, but recently it's been very informative. Is the one with the rap video girls the one Pink was on about her new song? I thought she was good. I think it all kindov ties in with what we are teaching our daughters/children by what we say/do, what they watch, etc. and how much things have changed since even we were kids (I say that as a 33 yr old). And it's scary.

daughters watch their mothers. it seemed like the one mom was in denial that she had one bleepin' thing to do with the fact that her thin little girl was obsessed with being FAT. wasn't the mom an anorexic?? Confused own it mom, she's been watching her and listening to her verbalize her thoughts for her whole life; the girl is living what she learned from her mom, that was my assumption.

i take full and total responsibility that my daughter refuses to wear anything but jeans to school. jeans every single day, and she has alot of them but still.....it's jeans or she's miserable. she likes her jeans.

I find it hard to believe that she didn't include sons in her topic. I know full well sons can pick those behaviors up, too.

Thankfully, I've been pretty lucky so far.

Being a woman who is almost exactly like her mother, I'm trying my best not to pass on that bad behavior to my daughter. I was always worried about my eating and how I looked because of my mother AND growing up in a time of the Kate Moss's of the world were the hot ones.

Wow, I've failed miserably at passing my obsessive behaviours onto my kids. Neutral
