Posted: 05/10/04 - 08:01 Post subject: Mother's Day Adventures (or the lightning should've hit me)
Well, Mother's Day was going to be a bad one once I got to church. Between the two hours of services, Dave finds me and said we'd gotten a call from my sister. My dad was apparently in the hospital for two weeks for kidney stones and liver failure. He apparently was being released tomorrow, and Dave got the phone number to the hospital room. Appears my mom was supposed to have called when he first went in, but didn't (that could bring up a couple different issues, neither of which is not good to think about).
So, Cindy has to work (real nice on Mother's Day, isn't it?), and I do my last 20-mile run. Or so I planned. I get about eight miles into it when a hailstorm comes. That was OK, very tiny stones, no big deal. After the hail stops, the rain comes, and the accompanying pressure drop screwed my ears up to the point of making me a bit dizzy. I'm nearly at the car (this was in the plan, this wasn't going to be a stop), when the hair on the back of my neck stands up. Rather than get in the position, I make a bee-line for the car just as the lightning comes down, less than a quarter-mile from me, probably way closer. (It hit a tree, as I could pick up the smell of the wood burning). Just as this was going on, as she told me later, LC was wondering what I was up to.
When I get out and try to resume, I find I pulled a groin muscle. So instead of the 20, I barely did 12. At this stage of the 'thon training, this is a disaster. To the point that LC said, "Call Deb. Don't e-mail her, you need to talk to her." Doing so helped, but in the understanding I need to get a 20-mile run in (psychologically more than anything), we're going to take a gamble and adjust the schedule somewhat.
Eventually went to dinner, which was very nice - unbelivable steaks! But that was the exception. Went home, didn't sleep good, and have been up since three AM or so. And now I'm here...
So other than that, how was your Mother's Day?

Mine was nowhere as interesting as yours!
Did the usual visit to Mom, moved a chair down to the family room for her and fixed a toilet that was entirely beyond my dad's capability to repair. He can't possibly try to fix anything that would require him to get out of his chair.

Yikes! I'm glad you're relatively (the groin isn't?) okay. While such a day could through your training, you've already overcome by moving forward with an alternate plan. Well done.

Unless you're a guy.
2. I'll bet you were made to eat those strawberries just kicking and screaming, weren't you?

Go find the box that says "Full Mason Jars".
There should be enough soup and veggies in those jars to sustain you for at least a couple of weeks. The more of those you empty the more pickles I can make.

Either way. You know I don't do things by half-measures.

Wowza--that was a close call with the lightning!!!
Have you been telling fibs lately, young man????
My mom's bedroom has been struck by lightning twice. I think either she's fibbing more than she should, or she likes being rescued by the firemen....story developing....

Actually, yes. I still don't understand that. But don't evah believe the adage that lightning won't strike twice in the same place....

Wow, GR, that's awful! You know, alot of weird things happen to you on runs. I think it's good that you run by yourself.
