Decided to run this one because it was only 10-15 minute's drive from home plus it was a small and competitive race. Not in Stanley Park this time but in Port Moody. The weather was overcast and drizzling at the start with a temp of 50-55 degrees-perfect running weather. Did my warmup and happened to meet up with an old high school friend who I haven't seen for 2 years. He just started running a few months ago. We chatted for a bit then we headed for the start line. Unfortunately there were no mile markers on the course (since it was a small and relatively new race) except for a called-out mile split time. I decided to try the same strategy as before on my previous 10k by holding back for the first mile and picking it up gradually after that. I anticipated the course to be mostly flat but it turned out otherwise surprisingly. My mile split was 6:37, a little faster than what I wanted but was still maintainable. I was glad that I held back for mile 1, as much of the course after the 1st mile consisted of rolling hills including several steep downhills (though the hills were short for the most part, there were at least 10 or more of them). I started passing people at around the 2-3k mark and continued to do so especially on the hills. The course followed an out-and-back route with the hillier parts in the back portion of the course. Settled into 5k race pace at around the 5-6 k mark and ran strong for the rest of the race. Even managed to do a sprint in the last 400 m to the finish.
Havent ran a real 8k race before (except for a time trial of 34:14 late last year); pulled off a PR of 33:09. Dancing Banana Was 41/202 overall and 4th in M20-29 age group.
This is the last race of my spring race season..Overall I'm pleased- bagged 3 prs in 3 races...I guessed all the hard work in February and March paid off! Smile Now it's time to gear up for the fall...

Nice race and report. You may want to consider wearing a Garmin Forerunner on your races. It gives excellent automatic split times at whatever distance you want to set it up for.

I gotta echo GaRebel on the Forerunner. No more need to worry about if the miles are marked ot not.
