Well, I'm just gonna listen to y'alls advice cuz I haven't done too good myself......but I do know that a partner who picks at little things, seems negative and turns their back to you at night is kind of discouraging.....

I said compromise, not concede. Compromise, being defined as "A settlement of differences in which each side makes concessions." Therefore it's a given that it's not "always put... on the other half."

1. Swallow the other person's mistakes. It takes YEARS to train someone how to live with you. You're going to be disappointed. Get used to the things that drive you nuts or make you go HUH?? about them.
2. Don't let your hair too far down. Don't be rude or inconsiderate or dismissive of feelings or opinions just because you're closer to your mate than you are to others. Because of that closeness you should actually try harder to be kind and considerate and just plain nice than you would try for others.
3. Unity unity unity. The kids against the parents thing, the wife against the husband thing, all that can break a family down. It should be you, and your kids (if any) against the world, a unified tightly-knit group.

It goes with compromise, but accept each other's faults. I'm not talking about an uncured gambling addiction or a non-reformed sex addict who still swings or something, but the little things. For example. I know my husband, whom I love dearly, has an incessant need to start projects and leave them in various stages of completion. He also putters (in other words, it takes him for ever to get out of the house so we're always a little late). I am the world's worst housekeeper and am absolutely petrified of bugs so he has to kill them. Tolerating minor pecadillos such as these is essential. No one is perfect, and as long as the good qualities outweigh the bad, it's just not worth fighting.
