I have lost my self control when it comes to consuming soda. I can't stop myself from drinking so much of it. I really need to figure out a way to cut myself off cold turkey but I love , crave, addicted to, the taste of Mountain Dew in the morning and then a couple or 3 cold beers at night after work. Then during the day I would rather grab a cold soda instead of filling up a bottle with water.

This Sucks.

Can you tell I am having a bad health week.

SNAP OUT OF IT!

that's all i have. after all, i'm not pleasant till i consume two cups of coffee in the morning so Neutral

but, shame on you for not hydrating more all during the day. i think i consume 48 to 60 oz of water every day.

Mt. Dew and beer are both dehydrators...how can you possibly run in florida in the summer on no liquid? i just attempted running in florida and was at the dehydration factor.

Dasani is your friend. hang at the water cooler.

try watering down the Mt Dew so it's not as craveable. i'd mix it with 50% water and see how that goes.

I suppose Mt. Dew is an acquired taste.

I read an article in Runner's World online about caffeine and sodas not having the diuretic effect most poeple blame on them. Probably something about the sodium balancing the caffiene - I really don't remember.

Having said that, it was enough info. for me to keep my mornin' soda guilt-free. OK so that's an afternoon soda sometimes as well. I drink only diet sodas - preferably those sweetened with sucralose instead of aspartame, but I don't go out of my way. I do drink a lot of water though. Usually a liter by lunchtime and another after.

As for trying to kick the soda habit, I gots nothin' dunno

<====== former soda addict Embarassed

one thing i did was 1/3 cranberry/rasberry juice. to 2/3 water. you still have a sweetened taste, BUT nothing bad from the sodas. intime you can start to use less juice untill you are drinking plain water. Also ICE COLD water seems better to me than tap water. try keeping some water in the fridge or fill the glass with ice THEN add water.

What that talked about was your body will "adapt" to certain levels of caffiene. So if you become accustomed to 5 cups of coffee a day, well then, your body will only create a diuretic effect when you go beyond that amount. With all the old Scandinavians in these parts, if coffee was an absolute diuretic, hundreds would be dead from dehydration 'cuz I kid you not, it's the only beverage for some.

One idea, I think I'm stealing this from Cappy, is Propel fitness water. It's got enough flavor to start stepping down from soda plus few calories and no caffiene. Worth a try... I'm doing it myself to bust my meager few cans a week habit.

I am planning on using my vacation to cut back on the soda big time and then work on the beer consumption after I get back. I know it is bad for me but lately when I have a stressful day at work ice cold water even with lemon or lime just doesn't do it for me. I want the DEW baby!!!

Try seltzer. Feels like soda, no guilt. Some come lightly flavored.

I like those too. Or even half OJ, half seltzer, like an Orangina. YUM.

I know what you mean about the Dew though, I drink diet Dews and Dew Code Red when I do have to have them, that'll at least cut out the sugar and calories......and definitely DO NOT go cold turkey on the caffeine or you will feel like you are detoxing from crack. I went through hell when I did that, although I was about a 15-cup a day coffee drinker at the time

OK. I'm coming out of the closet with this one. I actually have never denied that I have a problem with drinking too much caffeine, but my Diet Coke addiction is really a problem for me. First it was 44 oz. in the morning. Then it was 44 oz. with a can or two more a day. Then it was 44 oz. morning, cans of Diet Coke during the day, and 44 oz. again at night. Holy Crap! I'm probably consuming several liters of that crap and it's out of control! I have kicked the Diet Coke habit before. I know I need to and it's best for me, but it's a huge vice for me. I have been horrible as of late and know it has to stop to train for a marathon (substituting with all water). Why I let this get so out of control??? I DON'T KNOW! I've been wanting to come clean with this for a while. Now, I've got to get off of the stuff.

I feel one great headache coming on... Confused

monk sent me an article (PM him for it if he ever comes back) that explained how caffeine helps reduce lactic acid buildup.

Good News: I've cut down on soda consumption (don't buy it for myself to take home anymore, still have one at work break sometimes or in some restaurants.)
Bad News: I'm enjoying Budweiser nowadays. cheers

I tried some Propel Fitness Water today...blech! It had that same wang (isn't that a great word?) that new New Coke (C2) has. And it was too sweet for me, even. I think I'll just stick with very diluted Gatorade for those times that I need more kick to my agua.

I too am a soda junkie. I have started trying the new 1/2 sugar drinks. I think they are Coke C2 and Pepsi Edge. The supposedly have the same caffine, but 1/2 the sugar. Better than nothing I am thinking.
