Posted: 06/05/04 - 15:25 Post subject: Mistletoe State Park Duathlon Race Report
Got in bed at almost 11PM last night, but couldn't get to sleep between the kids keeping me awake and a nap that was a little too long earlier that day, so at 4AM when the alarm went off, the only thing that kept me going was knowing that I'd prepaid for this race.
2 hr. drive from my house to the race. Light traffic, nice roads and no problems. Actually got to the race a little early, had almost an hr. to kill before race start. Set up my bike (I rode my road bike for this one) warmed up a little, blah blah blah.
Since there running a triathlon at the same time as the duathlon I'm racing, there's only a handful of people that are doing the du (real athletes run twice, slackers need a swim to warm up ). Lined up and the RD told us about the rather steep hill to watch out for and that part of the run is on trails (I don't remember reading that anywhere). Gun goes off and I watch the lead pack shoot off like there was a million dollars waiting at the finish line. See ya' later fellas. I settled into a groove and found a guy that I'd use to pace off of. That ended up being a bad decision because I passed him in the 1st mile and was in no man's land after that. The lead pack was long gone and I was on my own. The run was pretty uneventful except for the big hill STEEP hill. Pace dropped off quite a bit tryig to keep from falling down on the down side and climbing up the up side, pine needles, stumps and roots the whole way. Finished the first 5K in 21:01 - 6:47 pace.
Transition in 55 seconds.
Out on the bike with all the poeple from the triathlon and I'm in no man's land any longer. I'm passing people pretty regularly because I hit the transition the same time as the slower swimmers (they did 600M). Found a comfortable cadence and took off. Bike Course Profile That big decent and climb was the most exciting part of the bike. Got passed a few times, mostly by triathletes, only once by a duathlete that I can remember. Total bike - 11.6 miles (11.8 according to my bike) in 34:36 - Just over 20MPH average. Kinda sluggish on the bike.
2nd transition in 44 seconds (yes, I changed shoes both times).
Out on the 2nd run which was the 1st run course in reverse. Passed a few people and got passed by one guy that I decided to use as a pacer for the rest of the run. He and I passed plenty o' people and DANG, it was hard to keep him in my sites. I don't think I got passed by anyone else on the run. Cruised into the finish chute at 20:50 for the 2nd 5K (6:42 pace) Total time of 1:18. I have no clue if where I finished or if I placed, I'll post the results later.
Cliff's Notes :: 5K run / 11.6 mile bike / 5K run. Both runs were partly on trails with one killer hill. 21:07 Run / 55 sec. T1 / 34:36 bike / 44 sec T2 / 20:50 2nd run // 1:18 total time

The 2nd 5K wasn't really that fast, it was the last 1.1 miles that were fast. First two miles were in 14:00 even. Last 1.1 miles was in 6:50 (6:13 pace).

Excellent job. I love the thought that slackers have to swim! I have a friend who is a tri-freak. He'll love that.

just can't imagine the transitioning part -- run to bike and then RUN again
Way To Go PH - strong 5K times for the trail/killer hill course.
we're getting kinda used to reading these DU reports; keep 'em coming!

Great Race PH!
It sounds like you were very prepared to do this race and confident as well. It was a challenging course and you are very strong.
Your times look awesome and transitions too!
Way to go!
