PostPosted: 09/17/05 - 14:54    Post subject: Mission Hill Annual Road Race
I got an e-mail a few days ago about a 5k race near my school. I decided to give it a try (my school even covered the entry fee Very Happy )

This was my first race, ever. I met up with a five other people from my school at around 8:30 this morning. We walked up to Mission Hill where there was a tiny park that we were starting from. A few minutes after we registered the walkers started their 5k. About an hour after it was time for us to line up. Everyone was waiting at the start line (about 83 people, a small race) and it was fairly quiet when some one yelled "GO!". Everyone kind of lunged forward, then got a good laugh when we realized it was just a runner in the crowd. Razz

The real start of the race was up a hill, but still as the race started the crowd spread out fairly fast. I noticed that the five other people I came with were all ahead of me. This course took some crazy twists and turns (luckily there were plenty of volunteers to hold up arrows thumbs up ) Almost all the roads were either up or down a hill. I ended up passing quite a few people including three guys from the group I came with (I don't think they paced themselves too well). I stuck right behind another person I knew in the race for the second half of the race. I had no idea how far I had gone during the race which was really annoying (I should've had a watch Sad ) When I was in site of the park where the race ended I begin to sprint (I held back too much during the race). I passed one person and the crowd begin to cheer louder Surprised

The end of the race was a little unique (even though this was my first one). They had plenty of water and even offered a nice meal, but the awards were a different story. The women that was holding onto the awards had her car stolen the night before, with the awards in it Evil or Very Mad

Out of 83 total runners, my school had three people in the top ten. 5th, 8th, and 9th. I came in 4th in my division and 9th overall.

My goal when I started was to get under 20 minutes, but after seeing that the course was almost all hills I was happy to get 20:51.4

It was great to get at least one race in before I attempt the Boston Half next month.

Thanks for reading.
