Pawlenty to run Twin Cities Marathon

Associated Press ST. PAUL - Gov. Tim Pawlenty is hoping to become the first governor to run in the Twin Cities Marathon, which begins Sunday at the Metrodome in Minneapolis and ends 26.2 miles later at the Capitol in St. Paul.

He signed up back in the spring, but the folks at the Twin Cities Marathon kept it under wraps by signing him up under an alias - until now.

Pawlenty continues to act as the poster governor for the Department of Health's Get Up, Get Out, Get Fit fitness initiative. But it appears that he just wants to "get done."

"My goal is to finish in a vertical position," Pawlenty said.

He has trained quite infrequently due to his busy schedule, said Brian McClung, Pawlenty's press secretary. He added that Pawlenty completed a 21-mile training run last week.

"The governor is pretty out of shape. I'd compare him to Elvis in his later years," McClung said.

Pawlenty and his wife, Mary, ran the marathon in 1991.

...dunno about you but being compared to a later years Elvis probably doesn't bode too well for my man. Sad

Of course! Who else better to calculate splits? The Governor just might bust some sub-4 miles that way! Surprised

I won't be there, but it'll be interesting to see how he does. We've known he's a distance runner all along, but I don't find his name in any race results, so I've got no idea what kind of pace he runs. There's been talk of inviting him to a local race for a little publicity. After he gets this marathon under his belt, that might happen more often. Kinda cool.

Here in MN, the State Patrol is responsible for protection. So typically, you'll see a trooper or two with him. I would imagine they found a marathoning trooper to run with him. Poor guy will likely have to carry a side arm and radio the whole way, or I imagine a few troopers will trade off if they don't find someone to go the distance.

When Ventura was governor, bodyguards where a big issue because the normal couple trooper were never enough in Jesse's mind. He blew his budget by hiring 'professionals'. Confused

On a related note....

In Runners World, they did a comparison of Bush and Kerry as runners. It wasn't a serious comparison, just comparing them as runners. They pointed out Bush's 3:44 Houston Marathon and how Kerry claims to have run Boston sometime in the 70's, but can't recall his time, and no official info exists. As a runner, they point out Bush is more dedicated and focused, but maybe too single minded due to the number of running related injuries and surgeries he has acquired. And Kerry, they pointed out dabbles in too many other sports and probably isn't a runner first and foremost. (They also busted on his $8,000 bike).

The info below is from a different source (I can't find the better one at RW.com), but is pretty much the same thing....

Quote:
Though injuries have reduced his running during his presidency, Bush has a treadmill on Air Force One and goes for hour-long jaunts on it in the air during overseas trips. In January, 1993, he finished the Houston Marathon in 3:44:52 (that's about an 8:30 pace); he's the only president ever to complete that distance. (Kerry claims to have run in, and finished, the Boston Marathon "in '80, something like that" -- but there's no official record of his feat, and his campaign did not provide further details despite repeated inquiries.)

Before any anti-Bush or pro-Kerry people get too worked up, the RW article on Edwards was really good. If you read it, it is easy to see that he is a "real" runner through and through. He doesn't like to talk about his running to people. His campaign staff says that the two topics that are most difficult to get him to speak about are his running and the death of his 16 year old son. Edwards has done 5 marathons and runs 4-6 miles per day. He's genuinely irritated now because he can't run alone anymore. Secret Service has to be with him at all times. They didn't come out and say it, but you get the sense he is a "real" runner because he runs because he loves it and nothing he does in the world of running is done for show or political gain.

Unlike EVERYTHING John Kerry does.
Honestly, I LIKE John Edwards. I had seriously considered voting for him when it looked like he might be the Dems candidate for President. If I could be assured that Kerry would get whacked the day he was sworn in and Edwards would end up President, I might vote for them. Twisted Evil

I was really bummed when Kerry beat him, he seems to be a decent guy.

Interesting, Kerry claims to have run a marathon but doesn't remember exactly when. For those of us that have run marathon's I don't think its a day you easily forget. Something doesn't sit well with me on Kerry's claim Confused

It seems hard to believe that you can't remember exactly when you ran the Boston Marathon and don't know your time.

Especially if it was your only marathon.

It also seems like this info should be pretty easy to acquire.

Maybe he was a bandit!!!!

HEY!!! Maybe we've finally solved the Jenny MacGregor riddle.....remember her, the chick that supposedly ran the Johannesburg marathon? Except that there WASN'T one?

It's hard to believe that he's even a runner. What runner WOULDN'T know how easy it is to trace someone's race results to see if they are lying or not?
