Posted: 07/25/03 - 06:42 Post subject: Minnesota Review
I'd have to say the Minneapolis trip was a success. We got a lot of questions answered, although there are still some what if's, the bottom line is at this point no surgery is needed at this time.
Dr Maron spent nearly 4 hours with Jen and I Wednesday afternoon, we went over all aspects of the disease. Dr Maron, has been treating patients with this disease for 30 years and told me that he had never seen the progression that has taken place before, and he was very baffled by that. He was amazed by the fact that up until a year ago, I was running nearly 130-140 miles a month, that I had run a marathon. He called my story remarkable.
He drew some blood to do some tests and for some research that he is being done into the disease.
He also suggested that implantation of an ICD (Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator), might put both Jen and I at ease. This device would
shock my heart should I need it. Although I am not at risk for sudden death, this would be a preventive measure. I am going to discuss this procedure with my personal cardiologist and ask that I have it scheduled to be done.
Dr Maron also thought and will suggest to my cardiologist that he reduce and/or eliminate the current cardiac medication that I am on. He feels this may be exaserbating my symptoms, and that it may actually not be helping me at all.
We were both very satisfied with the trip, and while there are still some unanswered questions, I realize now that some things that I once was able to do, I won't be. Some life style changes are going to take place. This is the toughest part of dealing with a chronic illness. Time will help.
We also were able to get to the Mall of America (MOA) twice and the Bloomington area economy is much better since our visit. Its a real neat place.
Back to work today for a couple of hours. Thank you all for the thoughts and prayers during this trying period.

Sounds like the docs are at least getting a grip on whats going on and can treat it enough to allow you a fairly normal lifestyle. Keep at it Cappy, you're doing well.

just the fact that he wants to get you off the meds is a great start in my opinion. sounds like you should both be relieved to have met with such an "old pro" in this field.
you and Mr. Cheney -- i'm thinkin' he has an ICD too.
and lifestyle changes may seem huge right now but, believe me, they become as routine as brushing your teeth!!
i swear, you guys and your hearts!!

That's great that you got some answers.
And if you're really into that whole big mall thing, we've got the Mall of Georgia just around the corner.

While I'm sure you didn't hear everything you wanted to, it sounds like you got some answers to questions that have been plaguing you for some time. I know first hand that the mental aspects revolving around limitations for cardiac patients can often be the most devastating, but it seems like you have a good attitude for going forward. I'm glad that this was a positive step, and continued best wishes for you and your family.

I'm glad you got some answers, and got to spend some quality time with a Dr. willing to sit and talk with you. (or should I say who has the time to sit and talk)
Glad you're back!

Dittos on all that's been said. As much as an extended stay would have given me time to hike down for a visit, I'm glad your treatment sounds less invasive and right around the corner.
Cappy = Remarkable ...definitely!

It does sound like a positive meeting, and like we've discussed before, at least now you can start getting your head around what limitations you do have and hopefully with the ICD, be able to regain more of what you can still do!!

Glad you're back, and that you have more answers, thus more control over your situation. Also good of you to contribute so mightily to the MN economy.

First, I'm glad you're back--just isn't the same without you here! (Plus I miss your fub smilies lately.)
Second, I'm glad you got answers to your questions and that you got a competent doc. (Ain't America great!?)
Third, if anyone can turn this "stuff" all around an make it good, and be a positive, shining example to others with similar conditions--it is YOU!! You have an excellent attitude--you rock!!
