I am surprised he was booed so much. He was inappropriate but he is the king of drama. So. I dont like his politics but he was out of school for what he did.

I may not agree with his views either, but he had every right to say what he did, especially since he was saying it for himself, and not for anyone else. That's where I think the basketball girl was in the wrong. Her turning around at the flag was not right because she isn't only representing herself, but also her team, her coach, and maybe most importantly, her school.

The other reason the basketball girl was wrong is the flag doesn't merely represent the current views of the current administration. It represents the blood, sweat, toil, and tears of many generations that fought to make this nation what it is. Turning her back on the flag was turning her back on America. Those, in my mind at least, are synonymous.

I don't really follow the Oscars, no really, but don't they pretty much have carte blance over what they can say when they accept the award? Wasn't he just exercising his right to free speech?

Yeah, funny how he couls spout off like that, but one guy from one of the earlier (less important, if you will) awards couldn't even thank his family before they cut him off.

Drama draws in viewers. More viewers = more revenue from commercials.

Hollywood sucks ass......this is exactly the reason I refused to watch ANY of it this year. Although I did hear, with great delight, that Susan Sarandon got booed the loudest.

Gosh if only everyone would say just what we want them to! Then we'd all be happy.

No, it's not that. What bothers me is I watch movies to escape reality. Hollywood was always the creator of fantasy and fun. Now they've politicized it. I don't watch these actors/singers for political commentary. It completely destroys the reason why I watch these actors. I'm not interested in what they think about politics, I am interested in how they act. Once they start politicizing, they've lost my interest and my dollars.

I can understand that. But the Oscars has always been a forum for that. Who doesn't remember Vanessa Redgrave's speech? Or Richard Gere's? Or even Tom Hanks's? Why is this year any different?
I know a lot of people watch movies to escape reality. But some movies aren't escapist. In this case, it was a documentary.

Stop exercising your right to free speech. If you need to exercise, go run around the block or something.

Actually I don't remember any of those speeches because I don't watch the oscars ever. Precisely because of the politicizing. I enjoy the movies merely for the fantasy and fun they project. I don't watch the documentaries. Life is hard enough. I need somewhere to go where there is just fun. I don't even know who M. Moore is. I don't even know what movie/documentary he did. I am afraid that I live under a rock. These people are actors not public policy makers. If they want to affect public policy, run for office!!! Get elected!!
Heck, Ronald Reagan did that!

was anyone really that surprised that Moore would go off like that? Certainly not me. Like Joe though, I was pretty shocked at how many people booed...
Here's my quick review:
Steve Martin- was....well, Steve Martin. Good stuff as always...
Adrian Brody- Best Actor for the Pianist Haven't seen the movie yet but I'm glad he won...great speech too! Wonder what pleased him more? Winning the Oscar or makin out with Halle Berry...
Chicago-Fest-- *puke!* It was nice to see them gettin snubbed towards the end...

VERY well said AH!!! Half these people are not even college educated, yet they can mouth off about public policy as if they actually know what they're talking about?? If you want to make a real difference, run for office and BECOME a decision maker.....then see how easy it is. Idiots.
I got this via email this morning.....I am dying to see someone argue with this guy as they're sitting safely at home on the couch spewing rhetoric:
A California mother whose son is right now in Kuwait poised to knock Saddam's block off, wrote her son asking how he would feel if she joined other relatives of service members in an anti-war demonstration in Hollywood last month. After reading her son's response, she elected not to participate.
Dear Mom and Dad,
It's really your decision to march if you want to or not. You are the one who has to decide if what we are doing out here is right or not. My opinion is not yours.
I do, however, have things I would like for you and Grandma and everyone else at home to know.
I am a United States soldier. I was sworn to defend my country against all enemies, foreign and domestic. People may not agree with the things we are ordered to do. I would like to address those people by telling them that terrorism is not only a threat to us as Americans, but to many other innocent people in the world.
What type of country would we be if we didn't defend the rights and freedoms of others, not because they're Americans, but how about just because they're human?
We live in a country where people feel secure with their daily lives. They do business like usual and don't worry about the thought of terrorism actually happening to them.
The people of 9-11 thought the same thing. We now know that it can happen to anyone at any time.
Yet as Americans we're afraid of losing our soldiers to defend our security. I can only speak for myself when I say that my life is an easy expense to ensure that my family and friends can live in peace.
I strongly believe in what we are doing and wish you were here to see for yourselves the honor and privilege that American soldiers aboard this ship are feeling, knowing that we are going to be a part of something so strong and so meaningful to the safety of our loved ones. Then you would know what this potential war is about.
We will stand tall in front of terrorism and defeat it. We as soldiers are not afraid of what may happen. We are only afraid of Americans not being able to understand why we are here.
I ask for your courage as Americans to be strong for us; I ask for your understanding in what we believe is right. I ask for your support in what we are sworn to do: defend our country and the life of all.
We will succeed in our task and will end the threat of terrorism in our back yard. We will also end the threat of terrorism in our neighbors'.
We have to remind ourselves of what this country stands for: life, liberty and justice for all. In order to maintain those rights we have to stop the threat of terrorism.
I am proud to be here. I will be coming home, but not until I know that it's going to be safe for all Americans and for everyone I love.
My family is first. My country is where they live. I will defend it.

P.S. Mom and Dad , please send this to everyone who has a hard time understanding why we are here. Ask the paper to put what I've said in a column so that others will know why we are here and what we are here for.
I love you all and will be home soon. I left my address so that if anyone feels like writing to let me know how they feel, they can.
