This actually happened this morning but it was busy at work and I didn't have much time to give it the full story.

They wanted Ian there which indicated to me that it was going to be a good session. We talked about his strengths and weaknesses and then brainstormed how best to serve him. We had done one of these before, but it was behavioral, not academic.

Strengths:

Incredibly bright, with his talents lying in math and science, but also has an affinity for language.

Displays strong leadership qualities.

Has a peace-loving soul and a shuns unfairness.

Weaknesses:

Impulsivity

Works quickly, but not always accurately

Organizational skills

Things we agreed on:

Ian needs an accelerated math and science curriculum.
Ian needs an independent reading program that will include handson projects over and above his reading assignments.
Ian's mom and teacher will e-mail homework assignments and important information daily.
Ian's mom will provide a durable folder for paperwork.

Other cool stuff:

The principal and mom will look at Mensa materials for kids.

Out of this meeting came the idea for a math club for the handful of kids at the school who are able to apply more advanced math concepts.

Chess club.

Young Eagles club ( a program that gets young kids interested in flight)

Nice nice nice. Feels good to have a smart kid. And to know he's going to get help using those smarts, instead of being frustrated! There's time enough to feel frustrated and out of things.

exactly my suspicions! he is a bright kid who's needs weren't being met in the regular classroom. he was a challenge to the status quo teachers and they couldn't handle it. is there a gifted program? great stuff and good news for you both!

Great meeting I'd say. Glad they are going to work with him. What a bright boy you have!

.

No, but we have a new principal who will not stand for a child being held back for a teacher's comfort level.

The other cool thing is that she wants Ian to learn a software package called Imagination Station and teach it to his classmates.

That's great. so the principal sees that Ian is bright. The Imagination Station will probably be a double benefit for him. He gets to work with information that will be interesting and challenging for him, and he gets to see the other side of the classroom, the role of the teacher. perhaps some of his students will misbehave and he'll learn how his own behavior has caused problems. that will help him with his own issues then. sounds like a win/win situation.
