It is being announced today by McDonalds and is being endorsed by Oprah's personal weight manager. (I think his name was Bob Green?) It is being tested in select Indiana cities. All meals will include a pedometer and other things to encourage an active lifestyle.

When they post the press release, I'll add it to this post.

Early thoughts?

Isn't that a little bit like Philip Morris providing inhalers?

Or casinos giving out phone numbers of Gamblers Anonymous?

If they really wanted to make an impact, they would make a "calculator" pedometer. So when you get your meal, it comes pre-calced with the number of calories on the tray and then it ticks off backwards down to zero. Maybe then some of those patrons would realize after a couple days that the blasted thing still hadn't zeroed out the reason why they're overweight.

That's actually a pretty good idea, jrjo. Too bad it would never fly. Think of all the lost sales.

Maybe they'd be better off trying to make healthier foods. Gee that's an idea.

They're not providing this to boost revenues - they don't have to. It's a half-assed (read:ineffective) way of making their customers more health conscience. Will it have an impact - that remains to be seen.

Further, I don't think it is they're responsibility to provide a healthy meal - McDonalds is what it is, everyone knows it, and people still flock to it, sadly, 3 times a week.

Big fat

Knowing nothing more than what's posted here, it sounds like a marketing ploy. I think it's a shame that McDonald's has to resort and bring themselves down to the same level of silliness as those who think McDonald's is responsible for obesity in America.

Ok. So, my local McDonald's is part of the trial. I bought one of the meals last night and thought I should review it for you. So, without further ado, here it is:

Got a salad. BIG SALAD! It was good to. I got the Del Rio salad with sour cream and salsa. It had 480 calories, 26g of fat, and 31g of Carbs. Plus I got a Step-o-meter. So far, I've taken 4957 steps today. I also got a book of tips.

They had 3 other salad choices.

California Cobb: 280 calories, 14g of fat, 11g of carbs.
Caesar: 210 Calories, 7g of fat, 11g of Carbs
Bacon Ranch: 270 calories, 13g of fat, 11g of carbs.

Add 100 calories, 9g of fat, and 9g of carbs to get crispy chicken instead of grilled chicken.

Salad Dressings:
Balsamic Vinaigrette: 40 calories, 3g of fat, 4g of carbs
Cobb: 120 calories, 9g of fat, 9g of carbs
Creamy Ceasar: 190 calories, 18g of fat, 4g of carbs
Ranch: 290 calories, 30g of fat, 4g of carbs.

Did you play on the play ground? That would have a negative net effect on the salad you sucked down.

Well, they do have those fryers for the french (ahm. Freedom) fries. I suppose they could drop the salad in there. I'm not much of a salad eater, so that may help the taste Smile

I actually did like the Del Rio though. Notice it was the unhealthest of the choices. Smile

The little kids ganged up on me and threw me off. Those mats don't help you bounce much. Sad
