I gotta wonder if it's a female perception thing though. I think I speak for most guys in trying to guess the age of women. Between 25 and 50, I'm awful at guessing. So if a 25 year old guy is out with a 40 year old woman.. heck if I'm going to be able to figure it out.

This is a current debate for me too. My friends and I have different ideas of what age differences are appropriate.
I am attracted to men that are quite a bit older than me. Like airehead, I have just always found older men more attractive. I have never dated anyone younger and I doubt I ever will - we are interested in very different things.
But I think it's great, either way. if you can find someone who makes you happy, who cares how old they are?

OMG, you guys are all cracking me up here....I'll have to be sure to print this out and take it to school next class.....
SC and AH, that's kinda where I always was...I don't particularly want to have kids, so of course an older guy would be more attractive from that aspect, although I wouldn't be adverse to marrying someone with kids...I've dated several guys with kids and it was fun playing the "evil stepmonster" as my one BF's son used to jokingly call me. He was great, I miss him more than his father! But Cheeky is right about the "we want different things" thing, plus the social stigma was always enough to make me cringe.
That and the "you might not be able to see the age difference now but wait til I'm 50" thing. 25 and 40, depending on whether the woman is youthful or not, might be OK, but 35/50? 45/60? The age is bound to show eventually, unless we're talking about Joan Rivers! But jrjo, you may have something with the female perception thing. I know myself I am inherently insecure and having to compete with women 15 years my junior at whatever stage of my life would be the cause of MANY sleepless nights.....

OL, if I may...how would you relate your aging theory to the other side...older woman/younger man? I agree with what you said about the men but I hadn't thought about it in context of the opposite, having always been horrified at the thought. I know men tend to want younger models as they themselves age, an ego thing? Or am I just generalizing? |
Well, I have no statistics to back up what I said, just two anecdotal data points. My parents had two couple friends where the men were significantly older than the women. In both cases, as the men retired and the women were still working, kids grown-up or in high school, the women had affairs with men their age (one woman had an affair and got pregnant by a younger man! ) and their marriages ended in divorce. I suspect that it works both ways though. I don't know any couples where the woman is significantly older than the man, but it still seems to me that if your wife is 70 and you are a 50 year old man, you would find an awful lot of younger women attractive in ways that your wife may no longer be. If you're closer in age, your bodies start sagging at the same time, your ticker starts slowing down at the same time, your arthritis kicks in at the same time. You become each other's support as well as friends and lovers and husbands and wives. I think that no matter who is older, male or female, the problems associated with a significant age difference will be the same.
That's what I THINK! Now let's see some data!

That's cool, I wasn't necessarily looking for data, just to see where you'd go with the older woman example. It's just a point I always had a very strong opposing stance to and I am trying to see the other side of it. I'd tend to agree with you on the age gap thing, if for nothing else than the physiological points you make.
