I am thinking about joining a race in Masters Runner category. I am not in a bad form although I haven’t worked out for quite some time. My friend tells me that I am no longer fit to race and that I should just forget it. What do you think about Masters Runner in a race?

Whether you are fit for race or not is up to you to judge. Aging athletes can still achieve top results. So, a balanced program that includes all elements of training is recommended for the masters runner to continue. Since master runners are more susceptible to injury the program has to be adjusted to a lower level of intensity (mileage, pace and quantity of hard effort) and it should allow more time for recovery between hard sessions. I would also recommend that you get “The Competitive Runner’s Handbook” where you can find some usable information about masters runners training and racing. Above all, I suggest you see your doctor before starting this program.
