Masochism 101 met at the State Park. This weeks offering was the "boomerang". What is the boomerang ? Its a series of four sets of uphill sprints on two separate hills.

Each iteration was as follows.

Easy 1/10 mile jog to first hill

Sprint up the hill to the top. Most of this hill is about 30 deg grade with the last 100 feet being in the 45 - 50 degree range.

Easy recovery jog down the hill and on the road to the second hill

Run up the second hill to the top. This entire hill is about a 45 deg slope.

Easy jog down hill and back to the first hill.

Repeat.

2 minute break after the second hill. Start again

I crapped out after the second hill of the second set. (Hill 6)

What's the point of "running" up something so steep?

I'd imagine a slope like that would reduce all but the fittest of athletes to a walk.

One Frank Shorter quote that sticks in my head is "hills are speedwork in disguise".

Even though the incline reduces the "forward" progress, the "effort" is still a speedwork equivalent. And certainly, the steeper the hill, the closer to a 'walk' it is going to become. But that's the beauty of it. Suddenly, speedwork is transformed from a body jarring high impact workout to a complete quads & lungs wretching low impact workout. This is largely why so many canned schedules out there start with hillwork for quite a few weeks before sending someone to the track or doing a tempo road run. The low impact of hills gets the muscles and cardio tuned up the same as intervals on the track. So even though the 'pace' might be close to a walk, the legs and heart don't see it any different than sprinting. And if a guy isn't as wiped, achey and sore after a hill workout as they are after a track session, they just ain't pushin' it hard enough. Lift those knees!! Mr. Green

/this is why I luv trail running... dem dar hills are speedwork in disguise Cool

Jrjo - I agree with you for the most part, but hill running is dangerous in its own regards. I find hills put much, much more stress on the achilles, particularly on the steep hills where you are essentially limited to being a toe runner and the achilles is supporting you entirely from footstrike to pushoff.

45 degree hill? That's steep!
