German Mom Suspected After 9 Babies Found Dead
POSTED: 2:39 pm EDT August 1, 2005
BERLIN -- Police discovered the remains of nine newborn babies buried in a garden in eastern Germany and arrested a woman believed to be their mother, prosecutors said Monday.
The bodies were found Sunday in Brieskow-Finkenheerd, a village near the Polish border, after police received a tip, said Michael Neff, a spokesman for prosecutors in nearby Frankfurt an der Oder.
Neff said the 39-year-old woman was believed to be the mother and was being held on suspicion of manslaughter. Her name was not released.
Investigators believed the children were born between 1998 and 2004 and died shortly after birth, Neff said.

There was a story very similar to this, same part of Europe, not long ago. Some of the babies were multiple births. The mother in that case said she was afraid the father would leave if there were more mouths to feed. Strange, sad story.

Isn't Germany one of the countries that adopted the no punishment if you leave your baby at a clinic/church?
Maybe I'm wrong about that...

Somehow, I don't thing "Mom" is quite the right term of endearment here.

And to Aire: I don't know about Germany and the no punishment for leaving a newborn at a clinic, church, etc. There's a similar policy in Chicago - a newborn can be brought to a police station, fire department, hospital, etc. and left. No questions asked. Unfortunately, you still get stories of babies left elsewhere with some regularity.
