I know a bunch of us are planning fall marathons, so I was wondering...
How many have you run thus far?
When and where is The Big Day?
Overall, how's your training going?
How would you rate the quality of your training? Scale of 1-10, 1 being what? and 10 being w00t!:
Hills:
Tempowork:
Speedwork:
Long runs:
Consistency:
Pace/practice racing:
Supplementary stuff (weights, etc.):
Any tips for us first timers?
Final comments/surprising observations?

do not focus on the distance. Focus on finishing. It is a wonderful experience. And it does hurt the next day.
Final comments/surprising observations?
keep up the good work. Running is about running.

When and where is The Big Day? (days!) 11/2 NYC 11/15 Richmond ( a glutton for punishment I am)
Overall, how's your training going? pretty good, but it could be better. Need to do a little more speed work and a few more 20+ runs before I will feel ready.

Any tips for us first timers? Be sure to get at least one run of around 20 miles. Hydrate-hydrate-hydrate! Bring Carbs! Gels, candy, whatever. Have a game plan for the finish, i.e know where your ride is going to be, have warm clothes... (my nyc marathon was a nightmare because I did not follow that one)
Final comments/surprising observations? I keep wondering why I do this to myself. I wonder what I will ask after Richmond (probabaly, when's the next Ultra..)

Final comments/surprising observations? | So far, so good. I'm looking at this as a two part process...completing the training will be a major accomplishment in itself, then there's the marathon.

Pretty good I think. I cramped badly in my first marathon, so I increased the number of my long runs for this attempt in the hope that more endurence will help.

Any tips for us first timers? as a first-timer, i've had a lot of encouragement from veterans, but also surprisingly a lot of negative comments from people who have run a marathon before. I try not to listen to too much now...good or bad. Don't get me wrong...advice and encouragement is great; but over these last few weeks, I'm going to concentrate more on how I'm feeling & let the big day happen without too much thought on what I should be doing during the race. I have confidence that my months of hard work will result in a performance I'll be proud of--no matter what happens.
Final comments/surprising observations? I love running!!!!! |

I think 6 marathons (maybe a few more), 5 ultras
When and where is The Big Day?
Oct. 12 - Chicago
Dec. 6 - Bloomington, IN (all trail)
Jan. 11 - Phoenix, AZ
Overall, how's your training going?
Ok. I'm not worried about Chicago, but I really need to step up my training for Bloomington and Phoenix.

Take the first mile or two easy so that you don't go out too fast. I like to walk the water stops (gives you a quick recovery, but it only works if you start early). Just run with what feels good. If you meet a goal time, that is icing on the cake. The main goal is to finish. Most importantly, have fun!
Final comments/surprising observations?
Be ready for cravings. You may finish and want a Big Mac or may want a salad. Every person is different. Myself, I like to have a juicy cheeseburger about an hour after the run and will also eat sour gummy worms on the drive home.
